Breeding Ocellaris Clowns - My unexpected attempt!

Just to make a point. I just witnessed for the first time, my clowns spawning. I'm usually at work when this happens. Guess where they decided to lay them ??? On the tile :bounce1: :bounce2: :bounce3: :celeb1: .

Thanks Guys! I'm going to cut down the tiles to make them "custom fit" all the surrounding locations where they are laying eggs. Hopefully, like you said, they'll get used to them and use them.

In the mean time, I'm going to make the necessary modifications to my "Larvae Vac". I'll convert it back to a "catcher" like it's supposed to be instead of a shop vac! The only things that aren't in these pictures are the Mini-Jet pump and the air-lift tube and diffuser.

My major flaws with this were:
1) I used a Mini-Jet 606 running at full 159 gal/hr... NOT a good idea! It inhaled anything that came near it! I went this large because I wanted to overcome the intake of water coming in from the air-lift tube and still have plenty of suction at the side port. I didn't realize how powerful it really was until I saw what was stuck to the outside of the coffe filter that housed the pump.

With this said, can anyone who is "successfully" using a "larvae catcher" tell me what the correct flow rate should be?

2) I positioned the air-lift tube directly over the eggs hoping that once they hatched they would get sucked in. Apparently this idea didn't work.

3) The flashlight I placed over the unit and lift tube was apparently SO bright that the eggs didn't hatch until the batteries died but by then, the coffee filter must have been clogged and there was no suction AND my main pump and powerhead came on and became a blender!

So much for my "Big Idea". I'm just going to downgrade it to a normal unit that actually works!

The screen was to keep out larger predators. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! Thanks

Here's the latest pics of their new batch of eggs. This is round number 3. Let's hope I don't screw this one up!

Sucking the larvae through the air lift tube scares me.. I worry about it physically hurting them. Nice nest. Good luck!

CONGRATS!!! I was lucky to see mine lay their eggs too but not "lucky enough" to have them do it on the tiles! LOL Hopefully once I get the tiles back in there, I'll have your luck!

It worries me too, now that I've learned my lesson. I'll be removing the air-lift tube and putting in a mini-jet 404 running at a VERY LOW capacity this time. Just enough to "drag" not "suck" them in through the side port. I'm also changing the screen with one with a little larger mesh so they don't get knocked around as they pass through the holes.

I would stay up one night and capture as many as I can the old fashioned way. That way I have a few in growout to play with before I try any new methods of capturing fry.

I wonder why nobody makes these with an airstone in the lift tube. It would work like the lift tubes on a under gravel filter. Safe comfortable suction... Just a thought.

I did use the lift tube. You can see it in action in my photo above. However, rkelman made a good point that the bubbles and velocity could hurt the larvae.

I will be staying up this time, now that I know they will hatch after a "true lights-out", not just MH's and Actinics out! I was staying up initially (all night) but that was before I found out that keeping moonlights on and pointing flashlights on them doesn't work! I'll be turning off my "moonlights" and roomlights this time and just use a very small flashlight in a corner to lure them.

I turn all pumps and skimmer off about 15 min. after lights out (all lights) and wait another 15 min. and check to see if they started hatching witch has worked for me so far. You probably won't catch even close to all of them but you'll have something to work with. For some reason half hatch one night and the other hatch the next night for me ,hopefully you won't have this problem. Luck is certainly involved when they lay their eggs on the tile ;) , but man is it worth it when they do :D

Mydraal.

You could try raising your temp a bit. This might get them all to hatch the same night.

I don't know for sure that it would.. Lets experiment on YOUR larvae and see :)
THANKS A LOT!!! LOL

Well 81-82 is about right. What are you using to measure the temp. Some digitals can have a very large error percentage. Although this is what I use!

This may also be the same problem I am having, I get small hatches and the rest turn white.
