Breeding Ocellaris Clowns - My unexpected attempt!

:bounce1: :bounce3: :bounce2: :dance: :dance: :dance: FINALLY!!! 8th batch is a successful hatch! I finally tried the "scraping the eggs off rock with straw" trick and it worked! I scraped them off just before lights out, moved them to a clear container with an air hose, started to stir and bam! They started to hatch! I've been stirring and scooping for two hours now and have a couple of dozen. I would have used an airstone with fine bubbles for this so I wouldn't have to stir and baby-sit, but I packed them away in storage and didn't have them readily available. I wasn't planning on doing the straw trick tonight. It was a last minute decision because after losing 7 batches before, I had nothing to lose.
 
:sad2: :mad2: Once again, I'm an IDIOT!!! After 6 hours of hatching and catching a couple dozen of them, I apparently overfed/contaminated them with rotifer greenwater! I should have learned my lesson the last time to filter out the enriched rotifers before adding them to the larvae. Instead, I scooped the rotifer water and poured it into the container with the larvae, then added a splash more of nanochloropsis. Note to self: "Don't do this again!" This is just so darn disappointing and frustrating!

On the up-side, there were 3 little stragglers that hatched after I went to sleep so "this time" I filtered out the rotifers then added them to the larvae. I guess I'll see how this works!
 
Scratch my last comment... I just killed the last 3 !!! I've been so concerned about "rotifer density" based on what I've been reading but apparently I've overdosed on the rots! Back to square one! AAAAARRRRGGHHH!!!

Take a trip over to www.marinebreeder.org and check out some of the breeding links. Kathy over there has some good info about rot density and keeping thier ratio to fish in check. Alos look into Matt's breeding of the file fish and the use of a plastic fish bowl to rais the fry in.

Never ever add water from your Rotifer cultures to your larvae tanks. Always rinse the rotifers in fresh water before adding them. Live and learn. That's what we are all doing :)

UUUUGGGHHHH!!! That's what I've been doing wrong all this time! I've read about the rinsing thing but never thought it was that critical! I really am such and IDIOT! Like you said, "live and learn" !

I do the same thing strain them in the collector and dump them in the tank
 
For the last 3 survivors, I did do a "strain and dump" (actually siphoned the concentrate with a pippette from the strainer) but I think I waaaayyy over did it on the density! I think I read that due to the larvaes lack of vision, they should literally have to bump into the rots. I guess I went a little over-board! Too bad there's not a training video on this stuff!

Ok, update for those who are apparently smarter than me and were concerned about me having a mega-dollar computer server in very close proximity to salt water aquarium equipment.... YOU WERE RIGHT!!! No matter how well you plan a room to keep salt mist away from computer equipment, IT WILL FIND IT'S WAY TO YOUR COMPUTER and anything else metal for that matter!!! :blown: :hammer: So, for anyone reading this thread, NEVER EVER put any electronic devices or metal objects in the same space/room as salt water. It WILL DESTROY it!:uzi: :blown: :hammer:

Luckily though, I pulled the equipment out of the room and was able to salvage the main internals and put them in another case. The server case itself needs some heavy decrudding! Lesson's learned.
