Would like your knowledge on breeding tangs .Want to know if anyone has been successful and what tangs have you breaded?
Going to build a Custom tank around this idea so any input on this build would be great.
Achilles tang,Sohal tang ,Vlamingi tang ,Desjardini tang ,Purple tang ,Regal tang are of great interest.
Thank You fellow reefers!!

have you ever tried in your hand in breeding any marine fish....?
otherwise you would have known that so far nobody 'breed' tangs...i heard few farms managed to rear the larvae though....

Seeing this is your first post,i wonder......

Tangs have not been successfully bred in captivity yet. So far the closest that I know of is someone who has had two blue hippo tangs spawn in their aquarium, but were unable to raise the larvae.

I know this is going to be a journey. This is what makes this such a challenge .I have breed multiple pairs of clowns ,cardinals, and shrimp.
I would like input or knowledge of this area if any even to the extent of mating pairs. That is why I ask.Usually i don't talk on forums but due to the nature of the beast i would like input on this area.Which usually comes with negative feedback from those who have no interest or ability to pursue the challenge.
I feel the right parameters and monitored stable environment most marine fish can be mated and breed after time.est or abilities to pursue the challenge.
I do think I will start with regals and work my way to the impossible as some say.But been trying for years and no cigar.
Have you tried to breed any marine fish AUEM?

Ambition
I think that would be the hardest part is to raise the larvae .Water quality is main then food source which would almost be impossible to sustain.I think tank would have to have built in hatchery with fresh live food for source .

@Nick150

What kind of setup do you have? Just curious.

What type of shrimp that you successfully breed?

I believe I read an article on the hippos spawning. Whilst unsuccessful in raising the larvae the author of the article did have some interesting thoughts on sexing hippos. Which could help out greatly when trying to pair two up.

I read a article to about yellows.I will look for the hippos article.
Thank You Dustyreefer
I have been successful with pairing Purples just no sign of larvae in a community tank LOL
All by accident of course was not trying to pair but def rose some eyebrows and brought me to this interest.

nope...been trying with a maroon pair for two year...but no spawning...they simply play and sleep together.....:headwally:
that's why it surprises me..if you have already been in breeding, you should know it too well that asking here is futile....MOFIB or MBI is your ideal place..

unless you already progressed in the field and want to tease....

While I guess it can't technically be called breeding but I have read several accounts of having collected spawn from pairs out a few different species in native habitats then taking the fertilized eggs all the way to met. and adulthood. Success was limited and survival #'s low but it proves it's possible.

breaded tangs? why would you want to fry and eat them?

Thank You all for your input. And no breaded tangs here lol.I think I will talk more to a local farm and see what they think. The guys at tropicorium are very good what they do and I feel confident they can get me on the right path.
Thanks anyways!!

I'm by no means an expert, but I did happen to see a video of tangs breeding in the wild. The females would sprint towards the surface while the males chased and released their sperm.

The video was taken at a pretty decent depth (approx 40 feet deep just judging from my eye) and the spawning event took up to around 1/2 the depth. The fish were at approx 10 ft from the bottom in a school and they would randomly rush up approx 20 feet where they would spawn.

If my eyes are correct, this would explain the lack of tank raised tangs... theres not many 20'+ deep tanks out there that can handle a schooling orgy of tangs.
