Brian's 270 Starphire

Very different growth pattern on that piece Brian. How much light and flow do you give your deep water pieces? I can never seem to get them to color up correctly.

Dave, I haven't tried to ID it yet but it not a Granulosa. The the branches are not smooth like a Granulosa the corallites are more round like balls. It's a piece that I got from Rommel after he got out for awhile back in the day.

Well, it sure is a beauty anyway! I'm not much for ID's but I thought it might have been a granny, oh well.

Yeah, those branches are pretty funky, really interesting looking. If you ever frag it I'd sure like a chance to get a piece!

Dan- As Public Enemy said, "don't believe the hype"... "deepwater" is just a term. They acclimate to light as well as the next piece. I have seen pictures of granulosa's at only 40ft. There are too many people that use terms that they just see on the net. Another one in ULNS... considering that nutrient levels and bacteria levels will never be close to the oceans levels, I just wish people stopped causing me to rant

Huh, I was always under the impression that those corals could color up in lower light levels and that in higher light you lose some of the deep colors. Not true?

Nope. They can withstand being up top as just as well as the the bottom. I have seen some pieces even get better colors when moved upwards after being acclimated to the lights ;)

What he said :D. To be honest I don't think the piece would fall under the "deep water" category. For the rest of my "deep water" corals, I treat them no different than any other corals. In this set up the middle island will be dedicated to "deep water" acros and smoother skinned corals.

I just don't have many yet and the few that I have are small or need more time to color up. I still have a number of corals that survived to move that look brown :sad1:.

I am glad to hear that you saved some more than originally thought. Get them in that tank

Thanks Dave! It is definitely a slow grower. It seems that every time it start to take off there is some kind of set back with this coral. I've had it for years and it only the size of a golf ball.

They're in there I just don't show them. If I remember correctly they where all on the list I gave you, so I didn't save to many.

Been playing around with a new photo software that a good friend recommended to me ;). Well my pics sucked before but now they don't suck as bad :D.

Maybe I missed it but what are you shooting with Brian? I find photographing fish the hardest, like my munchkins they won't stand still.

Glad to see you like LR. I think it is a lot easier to use unless you are trying to create something. Thats still a little out of my league.

So far I like it, I need to play with it a little more and figure out of to resize pics to thumbnails. It still dosen't hind the fact that my pics aren't very good :).

Well at least you have nice subjects to practice on...camera upgrade for the new year? (With macro lens too!)

I hope, right now the wife has a list of thing she wants to do around the house, so we'll see. If I need a camera with a macro lens I'll have to use my Dad's for now.

Still dealing with a small ich issue in my display, I've decided to put an end to it.... I hope. Not having enough QT space for all my fish to fallow for 12 weeks I decide to get a UV sterilizer. A 40w Lifeguard.

So here was tonight project....
