Bright Red algae in my BB reef

I have a blue tuxedo. That different? Ron also suggested a longspined. Guess I have to go shopping for one. Gonna try several small water changes in the coming days, just did 10G. Did lights out work for anyone?

Yup same urchin different name .:p

I found water quality didn't bother it at all .

Besides the urchins I have a fox face , mexican turbos and astreas . I left no chances .

;)

Here is a close up of the algae

Here are some pictures of my outbreak. Besides regular water changes, the only thing I dose in the tank is kalk 24/7 to match evaporation.

It's red or brownish. More brownish. Throws up hairs with a little bubble at the end.

That sounds like one of the Ceramium sp. dunno.

Either way it's the same deal as the other one.

I will tell you mine came from the base of bali aquacultred corals. I think they put them in lagoons for easy tending. Anyway it will destroy your tank if you don't get it out. I can sting acros causing them to stress and die.

I have not found that to be the case at all in my tank. All my acros easily push it back they encrust their base on the rock. Other than finding the stuff less than pleasent to look at, I have not had it cause any problems with my corals.

Same here Joe.

I have been fighting this same algae for seems like a year now. The urchin does a great job but the addition of a sailfin tang has really helped. The urchin seems to get down to the bare rock where the tang can not. I too think this stuff grows in a low nutrient environment as I run my skimmer extremely wet and still am not pulling alot of waste out. Great idea about the calcium reactor, i have now disconnected and will continue running without to see if that helps.

I'm not running my ca reactor and it is still growing well. I'm just dosing kalk right now.

Here it was when it was out of control in my 75 with a DSB, I'm sure glad it doesn't grow like this in my BB. In the DSB it covered about 30% of the rocks with this thick growth.

That is one of the 3 algeas i have(valonia, red cotton, and this type was referred to as red turf algea.) It does not harm anything. Just rather look at coralline that this. No detectable phosphates or nitrates here either. I will try mexican turbos when i get the chance

I have a few small patches of the stuff also. My purple tang eats it, unfortunately he's in my larger 180g & too big for my 120g reef.
I run BB with a calcium reactor & skimmer.

My acros grow right over it & some actually kill the algae & cause it to turn white on contact.

I believe mine came from the bali aq. plugs, as I had a few rocks with it that I took out of the tank & had none of this algae for 3 months at least......... until I added a few acros that had it sprout from the plugs.

Blue Legs

Blue Legs

200 Blue Legs worked for me!

Too bad I have the red bugs again and with have to pull them all out. I think that is what set this stuff off. I know I have brought in a bunch of aquacultured frags, and the red turf algae in small amounts was manageable, but I began to notice the corralline was being overtaken by this stuff after I treated with interceptor and lost or removed most of my hermits. Once I realized this stuff was getting out of control I added a bucket of blue legs and that has surely made a good dent in the stuff (track marks everywhere). But like I said I have the red bugs back again after the fourth treatment and now will throw the balance out of whack again by removing the hermits for treatment. This time I will not go too long without them.

Which species of blueleg are we talking about here? There are a few out there and some are downright mean IME.
