bullitr

broke but happy
i am going on vacation next june on southeast asia
and i want buy some nice chalices and other cool corals
what can i do to bring it back since most likely they dont carries cites permit?
is it posible?
thanks

Not sure of the legality, but I have read many people carrying them on board wrapped in a moist towel. Although I think it would be fair to say this was used only on short trips for maybe a total of 12 hours out of the water. At least this idea may get the mind thinking, couple it with some way to keep it warm and you may be in business.

I don't think Lawrence was talking about removing them from the ocean, he's talking about purchasing them from an LFS, and coming up with a way to get them back to the states alive.

But I'm pretty sure we're all just talking hypothetically... right?? ;)

not unless you buy CITES permits and an export license...

Maybe I should be more clear. Unless you have CITES permits pertaining to each coral to export them out of that country, an export license from that country to do so and an import license in the US to bring them into the country, it's illegal

you need import license from usa , cities permit from the origin , you have to let the fws know in advance so they can come and inspect the corals.

I've seen them shipped in wine boxes. The boxes are made to withstand impact and are shaped to hold the corals + water + heat packs.

Wrap them in moist newspaper and put them in a ziplock bag. You can do heat pad as well. Just make sure you put it in the luggage you check in not the carry on. When you land the customs dude will ask if you have anything illegal just say Nah and youre golden. You should've seen all the crap I brought back from Japan.

Fixed

Ian speaks the truth. At long beach they get a lot of corals brought in due to improper permits/no permit. Regarding bringing on a plane....I really don't want to read about you in the paper saying how you were bringing in illegal corals and labeled a poacher. I read stories like that every once in a while. There was one a month ago with some guy bringing in turtles from asia.
