Brown Saddleback ... Like this

Was looking at MD live earlier today and saw this brown saddleback as their product.

To be honest, I think this coloration is more of the exception than the norm. I have never seen brown saddleback looking like this, although I have seen a lighter color variation of black to brown.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I do not believe most brown saddleback come like this.

A large pair came through a local wholesale shop a few years back, every bit of 5"L and more orange then brown.

Wish I had space for them :>(

Yep the exception! I have a female like that who really needs a friend. I wonder how long it will take for me to get one. For what it's worth I got her just a few months ago from my local fish store.

I wonder if the coloration is more prevalent in a relatively uncommon collection area? Any idea if your LFS got them through wholesale or direct import?

I would love to have a pair, myself, but since downsizing...I'll just keep my eyes open for you two :D

Cheers.

Hey Scott- I am living with ( and very much in love with ) the manager of the store. So of course any time something cool comes in he puts it aside for me. So my clown population is growing (as if it needed to ). Anyway I got her along with several Allardi. The Allardi were in perfect health (still are). She had brook. Justin (manager-boyfriend) saw her and wanted me to save her. They don't always have space (esp. a dark place to calm clowns) at the store to pamper clowns. So if he likes a sick clown alot of the time he brings it home. At first I was mad , I'm low on space. Til I saw her. I was so happy . She came from somewhere in Cali. I will get him to look back at the list. By the way she is all better (at least for now).-Amy

I am surprised that one made it past the cherry pickers in California, must have been on a holiday or game day :D

BTW Scott- What I would love to buy from you is about four or more of Cujo's babies. Or do I need to post this in the buyer/seller forum (ha ha I'm just playing with ya). But seriously she is the best looking little lady. I have a pair and they have never even acted like they like each other.-Amy

Scott- She was in bad shape and she is huge. So I think that is why they let her go. I still can't believe she is still alive. I'm almost afraid to type this. Hopefully she will be ok when I move her. She is the largest saddle I've ever seen. And she is in a 10 gallon tank now ( not good). Justin called and said get a tank ready for a sick clown. Well I wish I'd picked a bigger tank.

Hate using the 10's myself, but when you have a clown to treat, sometimes extended periods...the meds seem portioned for 10's and it makes it easier to keep consistent. Gotta do what ya gotta do, so I use them as well.

PS: beggining to believe the only way I will see Cujo kids at shippable size is to send her off to Summer Camp at a real breeders house ;>)

Decode it for the rest of us :) What's "Cujo"?
Meet Cujo(she is a bit darker these days):

She and her mate came in at different times with Maldives shipments. Pretty sure we only get them stateside in such shipments.

Terrible shippers, really terrible shippers. Not unusual for a box of 20-30 to drop dead in the first few days :(

I have seen them from Sri Lanka as well.

Back to the saddleback. It is interesting that most of the wild saddleback pics have that color pattern. Few of the collected ones do, although I do see them imported directly at some stores. Jeff's Exotic Fish (http://www.ocfishshop.com/index.html) here in California brings them in fairly regularly.
I think it is a PNG color variety, where the brown ones are from the Philippines or Indonesia.

Question. Is it normal for them to turn almost completely black? When I first got my pair about 2 years ago they were a very light brown. Now the Female(5") is pretty much all black. The male is about 75%.

I've saw that color in brown saddleback, now you talk about it, I actually see Black saddleback that might have turned from brown saddlebacks.

Those black saddeblack actually have a "brown saddleback" saddle unlike normal full middle barred black saddlebacks. It is also from a not so common collection area in asia. But being a new collection area, mine didn't survive the quarantine, they were very finicky too.

I can believe that. One of my latz females has a black freckle that seems to have appeared on her middle band when she first started hosting a small S. haddoni.
