browns to beauties...

How many of you have purchased or received browned out frags only to turn into a nice piece?.

Just wondering if those $10 browns are worth it.
thanks and post pics if possible.

I'd say they do or die. Most brownies I have got have turned into some of my favorites. You just have to develope an eye for the diamonds in the rough, and be willing to have patience to let them bloom.

Some of the beauties I have polished would include, a "GARF" like Bonsi, "Jedi mind trick" Monti, purple cyphastrea, Ice blue Stag (once orange with red bugs), mystic sunset monti, and a few stunning lokani and granulosa pieces.

If you take care of it and have patience you can't go wrong with the brown bin at the LFS (as long as you QT in before).

I just got two decent sized brown/bleached colonies from a local reefer about a week ago and they are already starting to show some promise. One is showing a little purple in the tips and the other is showing a hint of greenish fluorescence in the skin :) I should take some progress pics for this thread.

I got a rather large green milli colony from a trade. It was half bleached, brown, and with red bugs. I did dip after dip and a quarantine. It turned out to be a really nice colony with neon green polyps. Also got a browned out stick from another trade and it turned out to be the bluest Oregon Tort Iโ€™ve ever seen. Took two months for it to color up. Still a slow grower though. Had it for 6 months now.

I have gotten a few browns that turned out the color their supposed to under good lighting and ULNS (Im running Zeo). What I usually do before I make the purchase is determine what type of Acro it is so I can determine what type of flow/lighting it should be under to gain its correct colors!!!

GL!

Here is one of mine over the course of the last year. I can't remember which one it is but it is an ORA coral.
After receiving it:

I have had this one since the start of this tank, 3 years now. It was the first sps in the tank. Got it for $15 all browned out. Here it is when I got it, the only sps in the tank, upper left corner.

I have a garf like bonsai too and was wondering where in your tank you put it. It has some color already but when I put it higher in the tank it got the browns.

I have a GARF also...mine is under Maxspect G2 LED (120W I think) in a nano and it actually gets a darker purple when I put it closer to the lights. I've had it in a Solana with a DIY LED and two frags did well mid tank and one up high.

I've got that frag glued to a piece of rock on the sandbed. led fixture is about 15in above the waterline.
