Brs video on black box

After watching video about black box on brs, I saw a 100.00 dollar light out perform a 800.00 light. The big thing w black boxes is there a 100.00 dollar light , this is how you make a 100.00 light out perform all..I said all those expensive , overpriced light. My own , I use sb bords.. I lose about 30% par w these diffusers , home made, a completely different light, you can drill out areas to let the led you want to , not be diffused, I own large sandblasting company I use sugar sand to make diffuser, if the members want there's done I will do for free, make it easy for me , return address and stuff, pre paid..

Thread should be deleted.

OP brings up the video, lies about the results, then sales pitches his way through the first several posts without being a paid sponsor. :debi:

I don't see a sales pitch here anywhere? Op actually stated he would do them for free, just pay the postage.

That was sort of the point to my first post. Nobody is claiming that they don't work. Just that if you consider the shortcomings they really don't seem like a very good deal.
That was the point of the video, except that, as set up, it is a straw man argument. Most of the negatives are addressed in all but the absolute cheapest black box LEDs.

Kenneth may be overenthusiastic about his LEDs, but BRS is deliberately misleading.

That's my point exactly, I just wanted to address that the diffuser helps with the issues brs claims these boxes have, im not in the light business but if you consider that for the price of one radion you can outfit a complete system , and also fix or repair anything that might be a little underrated or needs improved on.

I wouldn't say the BRS was misleading, they pointed the good and the bad. At 1 point I considered getting a few blackbox myself but I decided not to since a friend of mine had one that caught on fire. I just didn't want to be worrying whether my house was going to catch on fire.

I had a "black box" that even had a remote control and you were able to program the whites and blues separately. I thought my tank was doing fine with them but my corals were never really looked like they were thriving. Plus I had to turn them way down or else my corals would close up. I decided to try a Kessil A360W and the difference was night and day when it came to coral health. My duncan which I had for over a year started to sprout heads like crazy, my torch opened up to it's biggest I've ever seen it and my zoas started to multiply. This might all be coincidence but I won't be going back to my black box again.

I've had a great experiences with my 165W black box. Love the wireless features, program and forget. Dialed white channel down to less than 50 and run blues at less that 60, purples at 90. Have it mounted about 13 inches off the water line and made a surround for it out of 7 inch plastic to prevent light scatter.

In the year and a half I've had my 29g running, I've had to sell a carpet anemone as it outgrew my tank. Was white and the size of a hardball when I got it and a deep green at over 12 inches when I sold. My BTAs have split 4x. The zoas are out of control and will need to be pruned back. My birdnest is branching and has doubled in two months. The single head frags of frogspawn are now both multiple heads the size of baseball gloves and will need to be fragged soon to make room. Four polyps of blue spot mushrooms were my first additions and now I have 40 or more. Toadstool 5x the size it was when I got it.

I do have some very purple algae that seems to be outrunning the coralline. Not sure yet if that's a good thing.

Can't say they are the greatest lights, but for $150 they sure do grow coral :)

(Sorry for the dirty tank pics. Water change tomorrow.)

Peace

That is neat, I have been looking for a diffuser for a very long time. So where does one get a piece of a plexiglass? Because from what I recall regular acrylic will bend and crack under that much heat.

Quite simply there are black boxes and black boxes and not all are created equal.I had a couple that had proper fined heatsinks, all wires were heat shielded with decent drivers. I opened them up and showed photos of the internals on a well known UK forum and 2 separate electricians confirmed they were good builds. That was about 5 years ago and I had no problem growing SPS with colour. Unfortunately, I lost my photos when my hard drive went AWOL. A friend of mine still has his 2 and his SPS are very nice indeed with amazing growth and nice colour. It would appear that simply the cases may be the same but the internals quite different.

The stories about the fires scares me and it wasn't the first or I suspect the last I'll hear so them catching fire.

Im not even sure mine are not acrylic, I use Velcro to attach to the face of unit, mine seem fine not hot yo touch I can hit it with. The laser temp and see,it does a great job in softening up the light and spreading it out, I use my par meter on my apex to gauge ho much it reduces the par and effects the spread, visually it's a huge difference in how the light fixture looks,

That was the whole point of the video. To scare you off a product that BRS does not sell (the competition).

Nope.

On the other forum Ryan has been very open and honest about the testing. No one looking at a $100 black box is also looking at a Radion (or other higher end fixtures) seriously. BRS could easily sell the black box LEDs and gain a lot of that market

So I watched the video again, and I still see a 100.00 dollar light kill the radion, let me explain, there whole discussion is about even light and "laser beam effect" I can say if your lightning a small cube then maybe uou have a comparison, but here we go, I can put blackbox next to black box and turn them down , one on one the radion looks a bit better, add two boxes , three boxes, four , five, six, seven boxes side buy side against one radion, no comparison, over priced..period..we didn't discuss adding a diffuser, changing the leds, putting on apex, ect,, simple to me, some reefers are uniformed..or rather pay then learn, or be creative , so easy to bust out cash and claim you have the best...wisthfull thinking..

That sounds perfect! I'll go buy 7 x $100 lights to equal 1 radion ($649 at aquacave) for the same outlay of cash. Sure, they'll all need major modifications to avoid frying things at their respective centers, and sure, I'll increase the risk of my light catching fire by a factor of 7, and sure, I'll have the entire top of my tank covered by less than good looking black boxes.....

I'm still not seeing your point. IMHO (and that of countless others, btw) I'd still be way ahead of the game buy spending a bit more up front and getting a quality product with a real warranty and proven ability.

I thought BRS followed the same testing and showed the results, just like on other lights as in the past. My problem with the black boxes when I owed them was unless you where willing to hang them 12"+ above your tank, they covered the width of the fixture + maybe 2" on each end. Which was the outcome of the BRS test. For myself I like the BML lights sitting on top of my tank, which is a very clean look. (Too bad they decided to only make Pot Lights).

Agreed on BML. I would've bought more of them.

That's not "explaining", that's "spinning". You *want* a result and are looking at this through the lens of confirmation bias. I can tell just in the way you seem to be identifying with the black box lights.

The reality is that they showed a very balanced and sensible comparison of a generic black box and a Radion. And they said right up front, and in various other places, that the black boxes absolutely work. And they explained very reasonable pros and cons of each. They also showed that the Radion is clearly a better light -- but it's up to a consumer to decide if that is worth the premium.

Clearly a better light , at what wau do we say this, if the higher end light is 8xs the cost..if it was 300.00 I would say ok not 800.00 ,theres not that much difference for me to justify the 8xs the cost and btw there less than 100.00 now I believe the bare bone boxes are 2 for 165.00 free ship..I just don't see it, that tells me how much markup in the higher end lights, overpriced..

If you can't see the difference in quality (craftsmanship and parts used) , R&D, and the company behind the product then you are not the target audience anyway.
