Bryopsis & ULNS

Mine, which was a remnant from a neglected tank, just disappeared. I wish I knew exactly what I did beyond the norm--except for replacing some very old T5 tubes...

Ya know i never thought of that. When i first set my tank up in Jan., i purchased used Lumenarcs with the bulbs alredy in them...used xm 20k's. I don't have any idea how old they were when i got them so i'm gonna try replacing those two bulbs and see if that helps.

It's worth a try. Again, I can't say that it was one particular thing. It may have been the T5s, or it could have simply been a combination of factors, coupled with time.

I just bump up the MAG levels with some Tech M, bought a sea hare, I also cut back the lights on my tank to 6hrs a day. Lets see if I can fight this crap. I have not ran any GFO yet going to have to try this Fri night if I have time. Man I hate this string hair stuff.

the kent stuff has copper in it, thats why it works.

If it really is a ULNS, just throw a bristle tooth type tang or two in there.

I am having big problems with this crap too so I found this thread and plan on using the Mg method.

so how fast can you raise your Mg? I just tested mine and it was 1200 in my 30 gallon. So I have some Tech M and it recommends 1ml/gal to raise about 20ppm per day. How much can I add at one time? Should I slowly add and increase the amount daily or should I just pump it up to 1500 all at once? And how long did you keep it up there before the crap died?

I BEAT BRYOPSIS. I combined elevated Mg, (tried to keep it around 1650 with Kent Tech M, that took 3 gallons), Vodka, (10 ml per day), Prodibio Bio Digest, 42 gallon refugium (with cheato and culerpa), changing filter socks twice daily, skimming wet and cleaning the neck and cup daily. I kept feeding heavily twice daily. It's been 3 weeks since I quit dosing Tech M, and my Mg is down to around 1410. I'm still dosing Vodka. I am adding 2 vials of Bio Digest each week until I run out. Filter socks are changed once daily now, and the skimmer is cleaned weekly. I'll see what happens over the next few weeks.

I raised my Mg about 200 per day. I kept it at 1650 for about a month.

mflamb...what is this business with Vodka? I don't mean to sound like a dummy, but do you mean Vodka like the drink? I've never heard of that. When you were dosing the Tech M and Vodka did you notice any problems with corals, crabs, fish or shrimp?

Vodka dosing is an inexpensive way of carbon dosing. Very similar to the ZEO method or prodibio. A certain bacteria feeds of the nitrate and phosphate in the water allowing your skimmer to skim it out. Heres a good article:

I had a bad break out of this stuff about 3-4 years ago and all most gave up the hobby. Turns out the Salt I switched to was high in phosphates and my MG. was running about 950-1000.

After switching back to my original salt brand and getting the MG up it only took about 1-2 months for the Bypropsis to be GONE! Since then no troubles at all!!

You can use this Calculatore for all your dosing needs

The elevated Mg levels negatively affected my zoanthids. Everything else seemed ok. Just my observation. Definitely study up on the Carbon dosing before beginning.

I raised my Mg levels to 1600 over a period of 5 days; the crap started dying by the last dose of MG and has been dying off slowly every day. I think I have finally beat it!
