BTA Fragging

I had a bta that was too large for the small tank it was in. So, I cut it into 3 pieces. So far so good:

And the next day:

If this thing goes south, when will it happen? What's the healing time?

Wow, I dont think I would have the guts to do that to a rbta. Looks like theyre doin pretty well. When mine split it usually takes about 1.5-2 weeks for them to heal and start eating and about a month and a half before their mouth is more toward the center

It took me several months to finally do it! It got to a point where my sps started getting stung, so I had to do something. I have never seen one with the deep red that this one has, so getting rid of it for a smaller one was not an option. Right now my clowns are ticked because I have it in a critter keeper to keep them from bothering it.

Looks good so far. It looks like they already attached to the container too. I don't think you have anything to worry about. If they look that good the next day you're in the clear. Looks like next time you'll have to try quarters.:D

I have a red BTA just like that, it currently is in my nano and stinging everything. I guess I need to try and split mine after seeing your results.

:eek1: You are the brave one, I am definately impressed! They look like they are on their way. Very nice job. Mine usually are eating in 2 weeks after a split.
I have a question. How did you cut them?
What did you use, razor?
From the mouth out?
Just curious, may try with one of mine some day.

I did use a razor, from the mouth out. It's actually pretty difficult to cut through the food; more difficult than I thought. I cut it in half, and was apprehensive to cut both quarters in half, but cut one half into quarters, making 3 total. So far, so good!

Thank you. I know the bottom of the foot is thick like a tough muscle. I guess I will have to wear gloves to press on the razor blade. Good to know, are they still looking good?
Hope so, very pretty rbtas.

They are still looking very good. I flipped over the specimen container they are in and the feet are still securely attached, and the sides are beginning to close around the intestines/insides. So far, I'm happy with the results...

That is too cool! Looks like it worked well. I'm wondering if I can do this to my long tentacle anemone. Has anyone ever split one of those? Any advice?

I just got back from the beach. Here are some updated pics. The cut sides have formed together and the mouths have started, very slightly, to move towards the center. The feet are all attached. Lookin good!

Matt,

Wanna toss one in my direction when you come to get the tapetum? :) Looking for a host for my clowns, and that's the nicest rbta I've ever seen...

wow I have heard of people doing this, but never this well documented. Cool, don't know if i would have the guts to cut up my nicely sized BTA but

It took me months to finally do it! One of the nems already has a new home. The other one needs to heal a little more before it's picked up.
Thanks to everyone that has inquired about a clone, but these guys were sold before I even brough out the scalpel!
