BTA in Gyre

I'm so mad at myself for letting this happen.

While I was at work today my bubble tip wound up in my gyre. It got itself back out because when I found it, it was stuck to the back side of the gyre where there aren't any openings and there weren't any parts of the nem still stuck inside.

I pulled the pump and got the nem off. It's in pretty bad shape. I'm going to see if I can find a basket with holes in it so I can float it in the tank in hopes it will recover. Is there anything else I can do for it? Should I put it in the sump where it will be dark, or should I keep it under my tank lights? Has anyone ever seen one this bad recover?

Thanks Jason, I have actually been following your main tank thread for a while. Ive been planning to make those covers but just hadn't gotten to it yet. I'm certainly kicking myself for that one now. Were you ever able to find the needle point mesh with larger holes in black?

Thanks for following. You must be a bot then. They like my journal for some reason. I haven't yet found black 5 mesh. I'd like to find something like that. I was thinking that plastic gutter guard and weave though it a thick nylon line.

I have the bubble tip floating in a colander I got from the dollar store. It still doesn't look good, but it does look better- or at least I think it looks better.

I'm pretty sure its mouth was cut in half, but the bottom of its foot is still intact. I've been debating cutting its foot the rest of the way to leave two halfs to see if it would be better able to heal that way. My thought is that it might not be able to heal its mouth which was completely cut through, but if I continue the cut it would be similar to the way some people frag them by cutting them in half. I'll probably give it another day or two before I make any drastic decisions though. I certainly don't want to make it any worse.

In other news- I gave my gyre a vinegar bath, and then made the guards jason2459 posted. That way this won't ever happen again. I was only able to finish one side because I didn't have enough zip-ties, but I will be finishing before the gyre goes back in the tank.

The longer you wait to cut it in half the more the torn tissue will heal. If you do what you are saying you will have to cut both sides of the torn part to allow fresh tissue to be able to heal back together. Waiting isn't an option, its more than likely already been too long

So are you saying that you think cutting it is the right thing to do? Or are you just saying that if I am going to cut it I should do it now?

I'm saying its probably past that point because enough time to start healing and the original torn flesh didn't mend back together like they do when they split or are fragged.

If it survives it will more than likely split anyway, so now would be the time to go ahead and help it out.

I've got one in my tank that tried to split a week or two ago and then healed back up. This has happened to me twice where they split half in two and then stop splitting and heal back up. Well for the last two days it's been trying to split again. Its stretching it's foot over a high point in the rock and stretched pretty good. I feel like taking a razor blade and just cutting straight across the mouth and helping it out.

So all of this said if it were mine I'd go ahead and cut it with a razor blade which IMO is better than using a pair of scissors. If you do you will have to cut off of both sides the already healed flesh like I said before as it won't be able to heal properly since it already started healing.

I sure hope this is making sense.

The nem is still alive and looking better. Everyday for the first week or so it looked better while floating in the colander but it platoed over the weekend and didn't seem to be improving any longer so I put it back in the tank where it could get more light and flow. It moved from the rock work to the glass and is at an awkward angle so I can't see its mouth at all. But from what I can see it looks better. I'll try to post new pics in the next day or two.

Great to hear!!! Those things are pretty resilient.

Yeah- At first, I really didn't expect it to live, but now I'll be surprised if it dies.

Here are a few pics of it now. I know they're not great, but they're the best I could do based on where the nem is.

Here is a pic of the same nem about two weeks before it got stuck in the Gyre. It obviously has a long way to go to get back to looking that good but it has come a long way already.

I decided to move the nem from the glass back to the rock so I could see it better. It looks good. The mouth is healed and the tenicals seem to be coming back. I'm going to try feeding it for the first time since it went in the power head.
