BTA tentacles stuck together-bug?worm?

I was wondering if anyone else has seen/heard of this before-three different areas on my BTA's tentacles will not come apart to float freely. After close observation it looks like there is a transluscent (like fishing line) thread wrapped around the tentacles and it will not let the tentacles apart. When the tentacles are moving with the water flow, this thread like thing is making indentions in the tentacles and you can see them bend over at that point. Like its tight around them.
I know its not, but to best describe it, think of a piece of fishing line wrapped around two-three tentacles.

Is there a bug, worm, or parasite that causes this?

It makes me want to use a pair of tweezers to pull it off so the tentacles can separate! But I dont think the BTA would like it.

I cant get a good picture of it, cause it is so transluscent, all you see is the tentacles that wont separate. If I get a close enough picture I will post later.

Let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks jolene

yes it is new to the tank <3weeks and still in recovery phase of being bleached. I'm trying a few extra feedings as someone said most BTA's are hungry after being at LFS.

I am trying to get a picture-but the places are so small, all you see in the picture are the tentacles side by side. However, I will keep trying.

If it were me, and he was easy to get to, I'd take him out, to get a good look at him. Put a bowl in the water and take him out that way so that he never hits the air. Sounds like it could be a hair of something wrapped around him. It may be something that you will have to remove. But be GENTLE! There is not much to a BTA. You may even need a magnifying glass to get a good look.

The strange thing is that it has happened in 3 different areas on the BTA-not just 3 places on the same tentacles. Do you really think I should move him again, as it has just settled down the last 3 days? Magnifying glass is a good suggestion!

The first thing I thought was there was a bug or parasite that webbed them together but no info can I find on that theory.
thanks jolene

I would move him long enough to take a look at him, bring his rock he is on with. Don't try to take him off the rock. Don't attempt this if you think he is attached to two rocks, you will tear him. I would think the stress of being moved for a few minutes would be less than having something tied around the tenticles. But it is a tough call, because we don't know for sure what is going on.

I can't think of a bug or parasite that would do this either. I have never heard of this actually.

my hair falls in the tank sometimes.. and my hair is REALLY long. usually gets stuck in the tunzes tho...

Me too Tourkid, thats why I'm thinking hair! LOL Nothing better than trying to catch one getting whipped around in the current. I have had them get wrapped around a mushroom though, but not tight.

I hope to get a good picture because the estimated length is 1/4"maximum if i was to cut it and lay it out flat. Will keep trying for the picture tomorrow and post it if I get a good one!

Hopefully it is not a parasite from the LFS! I am so curious as to what it may be since this is my first anenome.
thanks jolene

Sorry about these washed out pictures, but I had to use extra white light on anenome to make sure the stringy, weblike thread would show up a little for people to see.

will post other 2 pictures-hope the pictures post
thanks jolene

Look at each picture and you can see how each thread thing has a white tuft or spiderweb looking clumps next to it. Remember these are very, very tiny and thin-hard to photograph!
I just think it is too widespread in individual areas to be hair!
(I actually thought only 3 places, but it is more like 8-10 places)
Any ideas suggestions would be appreciated.

Honestly, I am not sure-maybe since it took hours to get these pictures, I was able to see more areas tied together-but now I know exactly where they all are, so I will watch carefully next few days to see if its getting worse.

The pictures make it look a lot worse color than it really is, but I agree that it is still hungry-I'm just afraid to feed it too much too fast-whats your opinion-as this is my first anenome. How much is overfeeding and too fast?

thanks jolene

I feed twice a week, (silversides) no bigger pieces than the size of it's mouth. I also feed a complete reef food (Rod's Food) a few other times a week, where it gets much smaller pieces.

I wasn't saying it was hungry based on it's color. The short tenticles is what makes me think it's hungry. I've seen much worse, so I wouldn't say yours is starving to death, but it is not where it should be yet.

Have you visited www.karensroseanemones.com ? Great website.

Interesting that "raoul "posted in this forum also about her H. crispa looking like it had fishing line tied around its tentacles! Kindof strange!
