I have a few B.A. (3 growths) in my tank one is quite large. I know that they are growing from the nutrients in tank and I have got most po4 - 0 sal test and no3 down to 5ppm sal test. I have a heavy load in tank and will be buying new skimmer soon. Here is the question: how to remove or get rid of bubble alge? (emerald crab had 2 just gave them away 5months ago. I hear that it is a hit or miss with them as well.
water params.
nitrate 5ppm
nitrite 0
am 0
mg 1300
ca 400-430
phos. 0
ph 8.3

all steady for las year.

Kinda OT question....are emerald crabs reef safe? I like them and want to get one....can they get along with other CUC inhabitants such as hermits and others?

Sorry to jack your thread:p

what is hemostat? how manually without popping?

Otherwise known as a roach clip.

A hemostat is a clamp used in surgery.
You can get them at flea markets and head shops.

Or on ebay. Just easier to grab bubble algae with than fingers. And just for the record, I did not get one for purposes of improving my mood.

emerald crabs and bubble algae are the same as pepermint shrimp and aptasia. they are a hit or miss some will eat them and some won't touch the stuff. and usually if they do go for them they go for the smaller ones and leave the bigger ones alone.

Do your best to remove them manually. If possible, remove the rock, remove them outside the tank and rinse the rocks thoroughly in either water from a water change or newly mixed saltwater that you'll throw out afterwards. If you have to remove them inside the tank, I'd suggest doing it in combination with a water change. Keep your siphon hose near the bubble algae. That way if you end up popping one or it starts to flow away, you can suck up any rogue elements. Personally, I'd go ahead and try the emerald crabs as well. Like everyone has said, they may or may not eat the bubble algae. From what I've seen, they probably won't, but you never know.

In the end, the best way to keep bubble algae under control is keeping your nutrient level low, but I'm sure that's no surprise.

Yea, me too.
I was in a good mood for a while when I was younger though.

And for my record, I have defeated HA, cyano and diatoms but I have never been able to be completely free of bubble algae.

I have emeralds now and they will it very tiny ones but it's time for the emeralds to go. They get BIG!

My Emerald crab eats it, but my peppermint shrimp don't do anything.
I have asked about the reef safety issue of the Emeralds here and that too is hit or miss. Many people have them for years and it is ok, others have seen them eat lots of nice corals!

I recently heard that Desjardin Tangs eat bubble algae. I have a breakout right now and the emerald crabs don't seem to do much. Thinking of trying this fish from the red sea as well as doing a better job with nutrient export. Hope by skimming wet and running some carbon I can get it under control. I am also going to hook up a phosban reactor with rowaphos as I heard this helps also.

It depends. Remember, they are crabs. Individual experience will vary. All crabs can be evil.

I've read posts from people claiming Foxfaces will eat bubble algae. Never had one myself.

I have a one spot foxface that won't touch bubbles but loves macro algaes.

I have had emeralds hermits and have a naso, purple and sail fin tangs the tangs pick at rock work for macro and have never touched buble or hair alge! the emeralds (hermits too) only ate all the snails!
