Bubble King 400 EXT (Pics inside)...

Shawn,

Congrats on your awesome BK!

I was a little surprised (alarmed) by the factory packing job.

Doesn't a skimmer of this quality require a quality packing job to match?

Keep them pix com'in...

How do the connections work? Mainly , why are there two standpipes and is the horizontal part of the pump intake t blocked? If not what does it hook up to?

the horizontal part is the feed--one of the things I actually personally don't like about the design. I think that the feed should be elsewhere, but that's also problematic b/c of the way the water flows in the unit (straight up and down).

Ditto the dual standpipes, b/c personally I feel that a single would've worked fine, but Klaus (the maker) feels the larger units (400 and up) need dual.

So let's see if I have this right. Both standpipes are effluent. So they must be set pretty darn close togehter if you want them both to work right, correct? And the pump has the t on it's intake. The horizontal is fed from what, just a hose going to jour sump, or in a skimmer box? And the vertical part? Is this to Recirc it as well? Hence the third smaller pipe coming up from the white box inside? Can it be gravity fed? I think I am starting to see some of the points that make these work so well.

The horizontal part, in my setup is fed off of my overflow drain line.

The vertical part is the recirc loop

Actually, you can completely close off one effluent line and control the output with the other one so, hence my opinion that the dual effluent line is stupid.

So if you feed off the overflow, is there suction on it? Will it drain faster than gravity that way and empty your overflow?

LOL, Reefologist, I will try to keep this thread updated as much as I can with pics :)

The packing was done better then the pics show... It came in one piece... If anything would have happened to the skimmer then that would have meant that the tank would have been shattered...

landdragon, the skimmer feed has a slight bit of suction on it, so it'll flow through better than the 600gph that a 1" hole would be limited to by gravity, but it's not all that much suction. I'd hazard a guess that I'm flowing no more than 800gph or so through the skimmer, but I'll admit it's a total WAG.

I think the max I ever got into the skimmer - with the pump on - was about 600, then it started to go up my "relief" line. But my plumbing isn't totally smoothe, either.

I also think the second effluent line is excessive, but redundancy is never a bad thing I guess.

Of all the things incredible about the skimmer, the most amazing part is ... silence, silence, silence. I heard NAGA say once a while ago that the sound of the bubbles is louder than the pump - and he was right! If you plug the thing in but its not in view, you won't even hear it from 3' away.

Hm, let me see....I have a BK 400 ext sitting outside my sump.....puddles, nope, don't see 'em. No water leaking....I suppose if V/Tim really needs to be validated...there's a bit of salt creep at a union that I probably haven't tightened down enough.....

I mean really, that's a silly statement. It wouldn't be called external otherwise. Now for the internals, maybe V/Tim is right, but uh, maybe that's why it's called internal....

LOL, I replied in my main thread that you have had a BK400 EXT setup for some time now and have not reported any leaks... I would think that the INT and EXT are built the same as far as the main skimmer body and cup, it's just the bases are different and of course the way they bring water into the skimmer...

I had some question about the BK400s... I know that Travis just got an INT one... When looking at his pics he has a RD 2500 pump as I have a RD 2250 ?? I was wondering why these are diff, only because his is INT vs my EXT, or another reason ??

Travis's pump...

Also Travis posted this pic of some nozzles... Are those only for INT units, as I don't seem to have any on my EXT ??

The internal skimmers need a larger pump. no nozzles on externals. The assumption is that you're gonna inject all the air you can and adjust via water in/out

Thanks moonpod, I was not sure if the INT needed a larger pump or if it was a new design change...

Also, if you get a titanium needlewheel you don't get spare b/c in Klaus' experience they don't break. The Plastic needwheels you get spares.

Hmm, I was thinking Travis got 1 titanium (already in the RD) and 2 diff sized POM ?? Maybe all 3 were POM... But the 3 diff NWs are for fine tuning the BK, not replacement for breakage, from what others replied in Travis's thread...
