Bubble King Skimmer Club

Went and purchased a new Dwyer RMB 53-ssv air meter thinking my old might be giving me false readings. Well both meters read the same on my MINI 180 = 55scfh which equals around 1500-1550lph. Did I get lucky and get a 180 that's pulling a little over 300lph more than the rated 1200lph? not complaining, just wasted money on another air meter.

I have encountered a problem with my SM250.

For no apparent reason, it started to overflow after I added a fake live rock made of fibreglass. Started and stopped a few times and it still overflow on the collection cup, even after opening fully the silencer thingy tube.

My question is whether this fake fibreglass live rock is the problem to my dilemma? I did wash it with tap water before adding into the tank.

These skimmers pickup very subtle changes.. It probably would have been a good idea to soak the rock in RODI for a few days while changing out the dipping water to remove any foreign substances... The skimmer will regulate at some point. Here's what you can do to speed it along. Do a water change.. If the skimmer continues to foam, Connect your skimmer drain to a five gallon bucket and let it go nuts.. When it stops foaming, Put back the same amount of fresh saltwater it removed.. Look at it as a really cool water change.. Warning... it may take more than one 5 gallon bucket, so just be prepared with enough makeup water.

Thanks Jbanks for the prompt reply. It was my 1st time using such an item. I guess the rinsing wasn't enough though. I am exhausted from re-scaping the tank and I think I will switch off the skimmer for a few hours of sleep. I'll do the water change as suggested afterwards. Thanks!

Try raising it and operate at a depth of 8-10 inch of water.

I think 8" sump depth would be right on the money for that skimmer. Have you made any adjustments yet?

Another update of my SM250. I am one of the early adoptors of this line. Still going strong  This is a week's worth of dry skim

That's digusting Terry!:eek2: Gotta love the Super Marin. Your earlier posts definitely helped me to come to a decision a few months back..

Wow.. I run mine right at the seam, where it starts to cone.... Where is the level of the bubbles in the neck when you start the skimmer?

My Mini 180 is pulling 52-55scfh or a little over 1500lph. I am in 9.5" of water and have so much air below the bubble plate that I am getting a build up of air that when it releases between the bubble plate and body, it is huge bubbles that shoot upward. I can't close the wedge pipe anymore because then my skimmer would flood. Right now my wedge pipe is closed about 40% and my water level in my skimmer is 1" below the max water level line (I can't run any higher than this). Would raising my skimmer up to 8.5" help me out with this problem? Isn't the rule of thumb that by running the skimmer in a lower level decreases the air draw? Maybe then I can close the wedge pipe more forcing the water level back up to where I run that with less air draw and maybe correcting this problem. Any thoughts on this?
