Mini 160 or 180?

I am changing my sump equipment to quiet it back down to near silent. I have a 120 with mostly LPS and some SPS, and a medium fish load right now, but would like to add a few more.

Money is not the problem. Whichever I get, I want the skimmer to perform consistently. Im leaning towards the 160, but for about $100 more, I can get the 180 but Im concerned it would be to much for the tank......

The air is listed as 600 lph for the 160, but a few have reported higher numbers in this thread- is that expected or an exception?

Jeremy,

Thank you the good deal on the skimmer. I got it this morning in one piece.
Hooked it up and ran for couple hours already some dirty skimmate and dead silence, Even my wife loves it too.

Try to get some pic just a few minutes ago and the camera ran out of battery.

Thanks again and nice doing business with you.

Lam

This is a tough one, as you could really go either way. In my opinion, I would do the 160. However, I've really switched my beliefs in sizing skimmers in the last year or so. I'd rather go with a slightly smaller skimmer, and clean more often with the consistent performance, rather than go larger and get the up and down performance out of it. Just my opinion though... :)

Thanks Lam, glad to hear it's already working out for you, and your wife! ;) Keep us updated on how it's going.

Thanks Jeremy, Im leaning towards the mini 160 for that very reason. One of the best and most consistent performing skimmers I had was an H&S rated for 225 gallons on my 210 gallon system. That thing would have dry foam lifting off the cover and crawling down the side of the cup. Bigger isn't always better :).

what would you recommed for a 220 gallon with a 75 gallon sump. Only issue is my sump has skimmer section footprint of 11.5 inches x22 inches.

It'll be mixed reef, with a medium bioload

You might take a look at the Super Marin 200, or possibly the Mini 200. In my opinion either of these would be just fine for your system, and will fit within the sizes you mentioned.

Yes, the Mini uses a smaller pump, less water throughput, and lower air draw. It also has a shorter reaction chamber, due to the pump being inside the body. The Super Marin 200 is a beast of a skimmer, huge pump (still energy efficient), lot of air draw and water flow, and utilizes a cone coming off of the bubble plate and a coned neck.

I have a Bubble King mini 160 and my pump is not working. I almost going on 2 weeks without a skimmer. Where can I get a replacement pump? It is almost 2 years old.

If it's not 2yrs old yet then it should still be under warranty. If you purchased this through us give us a call and we'll get you taken care of. If not, contact your place of purchase and they will be able to help you with the warranty process.

I am assuming you have completely went through a thorough cleaning on the pump?

Thanks,
Jeremy

I will need a new Red Dragon 160 pump. I believe I have had the skimmer for over 2 years and don't know if the pump is still under warranty. Is there a place that would repair the pump or how much is a replacement pump? Thanks!

According to your other thread it sounds like the motorblock might be going out on it. There's really no way to repair the actual block unfortunately. YOu could always try to replace the impeller assembly to see if this fixes it first though.

I came home today and my skimmer had stopped working(200 supermarin). I unplugged it and tried a different plug but only heard a faint hum noise fromt the Red Dragon. I cleaned it and let it sit for a while but when I plugged it back in again nothing, only the light hum noise. The wheel spins freely and everything else seems to be okay. Any thoughts?

Pull your impeller assembly out and check for a couple of different things....... First, is the magnet and impeller head still firmly attached to the shaft? The entire assembly should spin as one unit, the magnet does not spin around the shaft. Second, when you pulled out the assembly, is there a little black bearing attached to the end of the shaft that sits down in the motorblock?

Jeremy the shaft and magnet spin as one unit, however there is not a little black bearing attached to the end of the shaft @ the motorblock

The bearing shouldn't be attached, so that's good. It still probably needs to be pulled out of the back of the motorblock and cleaned. While you have it out, go ahead and soak the entire impeller assembly in straight vinegar as well for a few hours. This will ensure that the bearing in the plate where the shaft goes through is freed up as well.
