Bubble King

I think, is better for using one BK 500. The modell 300 external is running with 2000 Liter air intake ( 530 gallons) The modell 500 is running with 2 x 1500 = 3000 Liter air-intake (=800 gallons) and it is possible for tuning the Red Dragon Pumps with titanium-Needlewheel from BK 650 = 2 x 2000 = 4000 Liter air-intake (1.060 gallons) when you want. The BK 500 is suitable for reef aquariums up to 5000 litres ( 1.300 gallons )

best regards.. Klaus

on the picture is running a BK 400 external..the pictures were made 15 minutes after first to switch the skimmer.

My 300 external is in my grimey little hands!!! What a pretty piece of equipment. Thanks to finsreef for not making me wait months for this thing. I don't even want to put this in a stand, it's prettier than the furniture my wife buys, lol.

I am looking forward to seeing the DC Voltage motor Klaus is bringing over for the MACNA.

Klaus,

I hear you are coming to MACNA...................I would like to extend a Wagu Steak dinner invitation when you come. This is the same steak that I had when I was having dinner on my BK500(the picture you saw). Perhaps you and Gary could come over and have dinner and see where the new BK500 is going.

Which BK would be good for a 280 gallon (main display) an a 100 gallon sump?

Would the 250 be enough or would that size tank fall closer to the 300?

Just a couple questions before I start hard plumbing ....

1) What is the size of the red PVC and will I need a converter if it's in mm?

2) The small red PVC piece that goes into the telescopic grey PVC "T" is really loose. Much looser than the red PVC into the grey 90's that are provided. Should this be PVC glued in? I'm afraid water will leak from there, but I'm hesitant to glue the red PVC into the telescopic "T". Can that "T" be replaced?

3) I am going to feed the skimmer with my overflow water. What is the best way to do this? There is a silicone (?) tube hose clamped onto the water inlet of the RD. What is the ID size of the tubing so I can get the appropriate sized barb (and remaining plumbing).

My skimmer will sit next to my sump and the return lines on the skimmer are below the top of the sump. But above the water line of course. So I'm going to have to drill the sump and install bulkheads so the water can pass through the acrylic without me having to elevate the skimmer - which is impossible due to height restrictions.

Any advice?

After running the old design BK 300 internal for nearly a year. I can even get out all these kind of skimmate even when P04 is lower then 0.1 from hanna

DSC_2002.jpg

and of coz with such powerful skimmer when I have my p04 reach 0.01~0 from hanna, it is ripping out all my elements from the water instead. Thus I have now making the skimmer reduce it's performance by running very dry skimmate and not even cleaning the collection cup.

And I can bet no skimmer in the market can be so powerful to even ripe out most of your elements in the water compare to BK.

Keigo,
what you saying is, the BK is overskimming your tank ? i highly doubt you can overskim, also what elements you are talking about ? trace elements ?

yes Heinz, I'm talking about the trace elements...
But I cant be 100% sure since there is nothing for me to measure...

I bet a deltec can, did you not read the review on the BK on reef frontiers. They had to stop as the BK was not doing that well.

tangblack,
The test was not stopped because of poor performance, it was stopped because of quite a few different reasons. The problems with the BK were due to shipping damage, lack of understanding on how to tune it in (once done, it ran great) and in the end, the need to pull the skimmer and give to a customer that had a problem with there's (called customer service!) The other problems were due to the weather here in Southern California during the time of the tests.

The test showed that there are many different skimmers out there, some easy, some difficult to set up, and even some work better than others. Heck, I was impressed with the ViaAqua, for how big it was (wasn't) it held up against some of the best.

And yes, I was part of the test, being able to play with each, and review them as they ran in the system.

Kinda curious why he had problems with a skimmer that for me was doing real well in less than a week. He fails to mention what model that is... either that or I just don't see it. If it's a BK 300 then it's the same one I have. I had talked to Madison during this and IIRC the where trying a different and smaller impeller for that tested unit and that impeller would have been interchangeable with mine.

The thinking at the time I believe is that the difference in hz was changing the performance. I saw no need for that change nor do I see the sudden changes in performance reported in that outdoor system. I'm running it on a 350g + system along side a dwarfed ASM G3. My system is in a warehouse setting with vented skylights which make it pretty open to dust at times. The only time the foam head collapses is for a time after feeding which I'd expect.

I've had it since March 05 and it has yet to go crazy and suddenly overflow. I have to run the ASM so close to the edge that it will flood maybe once a month.

I'd also not expect a local bolt of lighting to change the bubbles in a skimmer unless it hit it right on the collection cup.

I was always impressed by the ASM and still am for the price. They have other larger units that may be able to accomplish the same thing if used in tandem but I don't see any one single skimmer they offer doing the same.

IMO, when it comes right down to the decision to purchase these higher end skimmers like Deltec and Bubble King maybe you can't make a bad choice. I've not owned a Deltec before so I can't compare head to head but if I had it to do over again I'd do the same thing.

If someone wants to send me a comparable Deltec I'd be more than happy to pull the ASM and run it along side my BK. :)

I wouldn't call this not working. :)

Yeah, I gotta go with Ken. There have been many "loose" interpretations of that "skimmoff" that really demonstrated in the end not a whole lot b/c of technical issues. That being said, from first hand experience, yes Deltecs are very, very good skimmers. That being said, for my next setup I am trying a BK. Why? I used a RD pump and was absolutely floored by how well it worked. So I figure, a RD run skimmer can't be half bad....

I'll give a review. Whether or not it's a "good" review depends on the skimmers performance and I suppose your perspective. The thing is large BKs and large Deltecs or H&S or whatever are actually priced very close to one another, so I figured why now. I mean, how bad could it be right? Course if it doesn't pan out, an AP703 with the SCH is in the plans.

Steve, Madison was the one that was setting it up! I believe that the problem was in the air adjustments, to big of a change between settings. It was more a leaning curve at the time. As for the weather, if you remember, we had so much rain at the time, Dave was having problems keeping the power up (breakers tripping) during the rain.

I didn't look at the skim-off as a "which skimmer is better" but more of how each one worked, power consumption, ease of use, budget constraints.
