Bubble Master Skimmers more info wanted???

It would be funny if in 6 months you see a lot of people selling their BM 250 skimmers because they will be finding that their over skimming their tanks.

It is looking more and more that they are actually rated pretty appropriately. at least that what a number of people have been telling me.

Harry, I think the 250 may be a waste of some extra money on a 100. but you can always sell it and buy a smaller one.
 
Roland, Please explain your thoughts on over skimming.. My thoughts (so far) have been that it can't be done with just air bubbles... :) (No challenge- just want to learn more)
 
well I am getting the bm250 for my 90g tank:eek2:. They way I look at it is if two pumps are too much then I can always turn one off and when I do up grade my tank. I dont have to buy a new skimmer. All I would have to do it plug in the second pump. ;)

you know your nuts right ? I wouldn't even get a skimmer now. Just keep up with water changes and run GAC or purigen....

Bm250... lol ...pass over that J ...that some good stuff your smoking

thanks, and the price diffrence is small so that is why i went that route.

On a 20g, you really don't need a skimmer. Just do a weekly water change of 4g and your corals would love you!

But if you must have one, BM150 is good to go, up to 100g.

Seriously though, I have too much money invested in this tank not to buy a good quality skimmer. I'll be upgrading this beauty to about 100 gallons sometime next year, so I'd like to plan ahead and not have to get a bigger skimmer when the time comes:

What would happen if you ran the BM250 with just one pump? Would it still perform? The body is bigger than the BM200, so in actuality, the BM200 might outperform the BM250 when it's just operating on one pump, because it was DESIGNED to operate with only one pump. It's probably just an easy fix to raise the riser tube to adjust the water level in the skimmer so the bubbles can crawl up the neck, but these skimmers' bodies are designed for each individual pump to maximize performance. I'm just curious whether or not running the BM250 with only one pump will seriously affect it's ability to skim since it was designed (body, neck, riser, water/air ratio, etc.) to skim with two pumps running, not one?

Again, sorry to sidetrack the thread with my personal stuff, but hopefully we can get this tread back on track.

nothing you've said is off topic or side tracked. as a mater of fact its a great question.

One pump running may be a good option if it was a recirc with a small neck ID, but a insump with a wide neck 1 pump off causes some potential problems.
Water level being one, (easy fix) you can mod a adjustment for the water level do to the lower water flow( still not clear on the water level adjustability) .

The second problem may be harder to solve. I don't think it all that good of an idea only because if you cut the air in half. That 6-7" plus neck ID will make your skimmate extremely wet maybe too wet with only 40 scfh. so do agree with you that the 200 would perform better than the 250 with only 1 pump running. (really need to no the neck ID . I still don't know the exact neck ID.)

I agree the small price difference does make the 250 look like a good choice.

Charlie, im going to pass on the over skimming question only because its more about what corals your keeping... but I think it possible.

It might strip too much stuff out of the water. You've got alot of softies bro...
 
No i havnt gotten it yet, Greg said it could be shipped out by friday. Not sure if customs let it go for him to have it out.
I am hoping i can have it soon, I will announce when i get it.
Maybe a couple close up shots with a tape measure of the neck and such for roland here.

With what you have in your photo, you DON'T need a skimmer. :D Small weekly water changes are a piece of cake on your setup. Even if you did a 3g water change weekly, your corals will be happy campers!

You could run it on a timer. 12 hrs on 12 hrs off or on 8 off 8 ect ect.

Can you do this? Won't the water in the skimmer get funky? And, will it keep a nice slime coat this way and perform optimally?
 
No, it works fine. Just need to be careful if running an external skimmer as sometimes the startup will overflow the collection cup.

Some hobbyist who really want it quiet, will have their skimmers turned off at night if the tank is in their bedroom, and then the skimmer comes back on automatically in the morning.
