Thanks for posting, RandyO. Indeed there will be a raffle and door prizes. Additionally, Steven Pro will be stopping by to speak with the club.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there! :)

I'm in. I can help too if you let me know ahead of time. I'll be looking to unload about 35 lbs of live rock that is being overrun by blue clove polyps so if anyone has anything to trade let me know!

Hi Guys! The Boss and I will be there as well. We're new to the "reefer madness" game and looking forward to meeting all of you! We've been tagging along in this forum and feeling a little guilty about taking a free ride, so if you need any help on that day, just drop a us line and we'll lend a hand however you wish!

WELCOME !! Dave & Tracy-

Just an honest question here:

Your in CANADA right? (Welcome neighbor!!)
How does it work crossing the border with Corals??
Any problems if they check?

Just curious.

Any good LFS up in Ontario??

i have been told by a propieter of one lfs here in buffalo area that he lists all sales of corals as ornamental rock on the recipt and his customers from ontario have said they've had no probs yet :fish2:are still in question those guys only buy coral

rumor is there are sever great lfs just across the border i havent visited because of the new passport junk and the questionable rules/ability to cross with purchases. Any one with first hand knowledge please let us know how this works.

Frag swap im there got good stuff last year but i need a new chips acro mine crapped out after like 6mo of doing well.(thanks keith no fault of yours)

Interesting. I know if a value is a certain amount over something an such, you may have to pay more... not sure what that cap was..

All the years I went, only took a few cheap trinkets home.

Also, used to go on fishing trips for Canadian walleye(Pickerel), and great big boy northern pike & muskies in Quebec. Most of the fish (native livestock)-
we would use (eat) up there or release at camp on the isolated lake where we went. But occasionally we would bring a few back. They had a strict limit and you had to leave skin on so border could see what they were if they checked. Limit was small, and if you were over they'd confiscate, fine you and threaten jail.

But that was native sport fishing of course. Something different.

However, captive ornamentals- fish or corals, are still livestock of a sort and dutiable as well you would think..?? Are they controlled at all in any way?? Like other purchases, or possibly more stringent because they are "Alive" ???

I too am interested in checking out LFS in CANADA sometime perhaps.

So, this is something I wondered about. What are the current "rules" for captive "marine" livestock purchase on "foreign" soil and transport crossing borders?? It's very interesting subject to say the least.

Wouldn't want to spend hundreds to thousands or whatever, up there and find myself getting taken out of the car. Fined and stuff confiscated. That would suck.

As Posidion has said, anyone who knows or finds out about the details/regulations of this, let us know. Keep us well informed. It poses a good question. At this point I'd be nervous about doing it.

note: I'm not advising anyone what they should or shouldn't do

if you're caught crossing the border with undeclared livestock for your reef aquarium without the proper permits it's illegal. (Even liverock can fall under this law.)

This isn't a new development but things are a lot stricter nowadays than years ago.

yeah all joking aside I would not try it now a days..Like 15 years ago the wife and bought a expensive puppy from breaders in Ontario..When we got back to the US border we told the agent that we were just taking the puppy to Canada to visit with friends..It worked, but was very tense to say the least..

I doubt that would work in this age

l/f frag of Acropora suharsonoi
I have a colony of it Gary. I grew it out from a tiny frag that came from Atlantis 6 or 7 years ago. It's in a little ruff shape right now. The tips got burnt, and now has some algae on them. But the rest of the colony looks good. It's a nice green/yellow color.

this might lure me to the meet :)

Good Evening!
I’ve never tried to bring any corals into the US, but going back into Canada I declare everything accurately and the price I paid. I usually have around $100.00 - $150.00 worth and never get sent in for duty or told I couldn’t bring corals, fish or inverts in. One time I had a little over $800.00 worth and I had to pay about $130.00 for duty. I haven’t found a really notable Canadian LFS yet so we visit the USA. We now routinely travel the Buffalo to Rochester corridor. Anything up to two hours out of Buffalo is just a short road trip. We’re going to check out the Toronto area soon just to see what is up that way, we’ll let you know!
