Tom, you continue to do the cleanest work that I've ever seen.
How long until the saltwater testing begins?
Thanks, Mike. I plan to fill the system with SW next week, but as you mentioned, just for testing.

I'm impressed with your piping .... How is your pipe so clean with no markings visible? Do you clean it all off before installation or are they not visible?
Thanks for the compliment, Alan.

I used to actually clean all the markings off. Did that until even I started thinking it was a little weird, ;) so I stopped. Now I just turn the markings to the back - still a little weird, huh?

Just a little, but I'm going to do the same thing on the 300. It adds to the pro look.

What a lovely setup it is going to be. All the best and I would love to see it up and running very shortly. If I come to the USA I would love to visit you. I hope you could spare an hour for me since I be coming all the way from Manchester UK.... lol... Best wishes

Glassreef, I just can´t wait to see it beeing populated !!!

One last question to bother you (at least the last question of the day...)

Could you send me the size of your overflow box ?

Best regards.

As some of you might have noted, I purchased an AquaController III Pro to automate much of the system. It seems like a decent device. It has a wide range of functionality and experience reports reflect a good record of reliability.

I also purchased the software (AquaNotes) that Neptune Systems sells as a PC based "controller utility" for the AC-III. It does a decent job but is a little cumbersome for my taste. I had always planned to have a PC available in the fishroom to handle various tasks. As I managed to familiarize myself a little with the AC-III, I noticed that it wouldn't be too difficult to throw together a small PC based utility application to provide the functions I need in a more (to me, anyway) convenient form. Here's what I came up with (the beginning, anyway):

ACIII-Util-1.jpg

You'll notice in the pic above that the basic status values are displayed at the top of the app's window. They include temperature, pH, ORP, and conductivity. At the bottom of the window the internal AC-III date is shown, along with the current system status.

The first function - what I call Device State - is shown above. It displays the current ON/OFF status for each attached device and , in addition, allows turning each device on and off.

The pic below shows the "Device Name" function. This is just a means of inputting and displaying a name for each device so that its not necessary to rely on the cryptic 3 characters names native to the AC-III:

ACIII-Util-2.jpg

The last pic shows the window used to set the necessary parameters for accessing and communicating with the AC-III. Here I'll be adding number of additional parameters to increase functionality:

ACIII-Util-3.jpg

The utility also feeds a small LCD screen with status data. The screen will be mounted on the living room wall, next to the tank and display a constantly updated snapshot of the most important tank parameters.

Playing around with the AC-III, it dawned on me that it would be possible to actually control attached devices via a program running on a PC. This would allow very complex control logic. Its something I'll be exploring in the next couple of months.

BTW: I am aware that I'm dating myself  by using the Windows Classic Style, as opposed to Win XP or Vista's look. Let's face it, its hard to teach an old dog new tricks. :D

tahiriqbal - yes, that would definitely be a long trip.

Carlos Arouche - the overflow box is 224cm (88") long, 15cm (6") wide, and 18cm (7") high.

Elliot - Glad you like it. Got any pics of your VFD setup?

Shekki - are you kidding. She got the house. The fish room and tank was my part of the deal. Hers was the house, the garden, the car, the credit cards ....:D ;)

Tom, I'm glad to see you "playing" with the controller ;)

Do you find it easier to set the controller using the "AquaNotes" ?

Ed and I were "reading"our today.
It looks like this is going to take awhile to set up

Tom,

Need little utility, quick question - I'm not too familiar with the ACIII, do you read the values from it by polling the built in web server?

edandsandy - Hi Sandy - yes, I find it much easier with AquaNotes. Trying to use the controller's keypad and interface is a lesson in frustration - at least for me and my 10 thumbs.

Jeff - thanks for the kind words Jeff, they are much appreciated.

law086 - well you could if you wanted, but you can also read the data directly from the controllers LCD screen.

that controller set up is sweet....i am trying to spend a lot of time reading about them and hearing what others think about them before i buy one....very cool though. always enjoying see the e-mails about this build!!! keep it up!!

Glad you enjoyed it Paulie. In case you haven't seen it yet, take a look at Aquarium Controllers Info

Hi Tom,

I'm not sure what you mean about reading the values from the Controllers LCD screen. Can you clarify?

Thanks!
Ron

Hey Tom --- I would love for someone to invent a single controller that would also monitor Calcium, Magnesium and Alkalinity along with the other elements. Chris :)

Hey Ron. Sorry 'bout that. :( I completely misunderstood your original question. I was probably having one of my senior moments. The correct answer is - yes, I'm polling the built-in server. Right now I have the AquaController hooked up to my wireless network via a LinkSys game adapter. Works great!

Boy! That would be cool, huh. Problem is, it would cost an arm and a leg. :(

Hey Tom --- With all the attention to detail that you have put into the outside of your system, I can't wait to see what you have planned for the inside. Chris
