Building My 375gal Glass Reef

... I personally would try two other bulbs to see what kind of response you would get. I do know that some of my corals when they were recieving too much light they would lose their coloration and begin to become pale.
I'm tending toward doing that. I planned on going to the LFS tomorrow and pick up two 400W 20K Radiums. I'll see if I can get some decent pics of the corals this afternoon. Maybe that will better illustrate the problems.

Just a quick post of a pic I just took. It's my Flame Hawk sitting on a Golden Bird's Nest. I thought it looked kinda cool:

Have you observed your flame hawk bothering any of your coral?

Is there anyway you can take pictures of the frag tanks you have set up now and post them???

I would like to see them on the stand if you can.

Thanx

No, not at all. He doesn't even sit on the corals for long intervals. I know some have reported trouble, but I have had none.

Yes, I'll have some pics of the tanks on the stand and the plumbing tomorrow - however the tanks are not yet carrying water.

How about shrimp and other inverts? I love the "personality" of this fish, and am trying to talk myself into obtaining one...

I have four cleaner shrimp (L. amboinensis) and a number of peppermint shrimp - from small to large. Never noticed the Hawk Fish bothering any of them. He's currently about 3" long.

Went to my LFS (FAOIS) and picked up two 400W Radium 20K SE bulbs. I installed them on the left side of the tank. I want to see if they will make any difference as far as my corals are concerned. I got a couple new corals and placed them under the new lights. If lights are not the problem, the corals should have lost their color by next week. At least, that's what's happened, up till now.

Here are the new guys:

Misc. Acropora:

The new Radiums are quite a bit bluer than my Reeflux 12Ks, but I think I like the Reefluxes better. The colors seem truer and brighter. Well, we'll see ....

BTW: what does everyone use to dip their corals against parasites, etc?

Here's a couple of misc. pics from early this morning. Nothing special - I just thought they were kinda neat.

Some Blue Chromis:

A close up of some RBTA tentacles (w/o bubbles ;) ):

I use revive for dipping my new corals. As for the corals losing their colors, are you talking about maricultured/wild pieces? Many of them just do not do well in captivity :(

Tom, What camera/set up doyou shoot?

Hey Mark ... Some are maricultured, some not. You're right, though, the maricultured seem to do worse than the aquacultured frags as far as coloring is concerned. The growth of the maricultured seems to be as good, or better, than the aquacultured. Would you mind going into the maricultured drawbacks.

My first plunge into the SPS world has been quite an experience. I must admit I thought that, considering my years of experience with SW, I'd have no problem. Turns out the whole thing is a little more complex than I anticipated. Lot's to learn. My knowledge of how to set up and stabilize correct params, etc. keeps my fish in top shape. The corals are growing and look healthy, I'm just going to have to get my head around the nourishment/lighting thing and the involved complexities before my corals start looking the way I'd like.

My camera setup is a Nikon D2X with 200mm F4.0 Mikro for close-ups and 50mm F1.8 for general pics. Photography's my other main hobby so I already had the kit - didn't have to buy anything for taking pics of the tank, etc.

wow.... somehow missed this thread. Impressive work. As much as I tend to enjoy my 'hack and slash' style of reefing I do enjoy watching a set up being well planned and exicuted

Just think of it really simply, we are taking farmed or wild caught animals from the ocean and placing them in an environment that is foreign to them. Think about when you are in a new situation yourself; there are only a small percentage of people that will react normally and thrive right off the back. Some may take a little longer, whereas, others are just a goner from day one. I have had wild pieces that look great and then one day they just brown out or peeled for no apparent reasoning.

I would not base your colors off of wild/mari pieces because there will always be some sort of color shift. I would always base your colors off of a proven color palet that would allow you to have a solid baseline. Over time, you will notice the little things and see patterns. Good luck and you know where you can find me if you need me ;)
