Building my own rimless: Starfire or Regular Glass in Suffolk County?

Im not having luck finding a place that would custom build a tank so I figured Id try and build one myself.

Does anyone a good place to buy cut starfire glass or high clarity glass in Sufffolk county or nearby? And normal glass?

Does anybody have experience putting there own tank together Id love advice.

I want rimless I was thinking 1/4 inch glass but maybe 3/8, Possibly a floating glass bottom for extra strenght but I really dont want to have it if its not necessary.

Is regular aquairum silicone strong enough for a tank this size?

What were those rimless or seamless very cool tanks that were at NERAC last year? If you want something cool looking you cant beat those tanks!

Haha. I wouldn't go that far, but thanks for the compliment.

Garf.org reccomends 1/4" glass with a rim. I think i would use 3/8" glass if you can. You would be surprised how much 1/4" glass can bow over 30". I bet you could get away with 1/4" but 3/8" would help me sleep at night. I don't know where you can get starphire locally, I know joe mentioned a place once and I can't remember. Good luck.

Also, there are some silicones that are supposed to be stronger. Dow and GE both make a product that is supposed to be stronger and is safe. I would think about using black, only because i like how it looks. Another tip, use some masking tape to make the edges of the silicone nice and neat. Hope i was of some help, let us know if you have more questions.

Just a disclaimer, i've never built my own tank, i'm jsut relaying advice i have heard through others. The DIY forum is a great place to find some people with experience in this area. Good luck

the rimless tanks are Zeroedge: www.zeroedgeaquarium.com. As I recall they are at least 3/8 if not 1/2 inch thick, and I think they are acrylic.

Those zero edge aquariums are awsome they seem to be large though I saw a threa dof someone that converted one to a normal tank they should just start making those style tanks without the watefall effects.


Thanks for the help everyone Its fun to be coming back into the hobby I cant wait to get the tank running I was so close this week until I cracked it. I think I might just pick up another 20G Long and redrill it and plumb it considering I have a bucket of live rock curing lol and a reef construction mess to get cleaned up lol.

How is your thermal loop coming Shyland? I didnt see any post on my thread maybe I should check lol

Loop is coming along, i had to go to New Jersey this weekend to renovate my sisters bathroom so i couldn't get anything done. I'm going to bend the titanium this week and i'll post an update. Good luck with the tank, check out petland discounts for tanks, cheapest around.
