Bulkheads

Hello All,

This post is not to bash Marine Depot. As a matter of fact, I have ordered from them several times, and have always been happy with how fast they ship things. I would definitely order from them again.

The purpose of this post is to warn people and give MD the heads up. I didn't know who to email this to at MD, but thought they might be interested in feedback on a product they carry.

A while back, I ordered 6 bulkheads from MD. Three were 3/4" bulkheads (dual threaded) and three were 1" bulkheads (dual threaded). I really only need two of each, but ordered one extra of each "just incase." Also - if I didn't need them, I could always use them later on other projects. Well, all three of my 3/4" bulkheads thread where the nut screws onto were easily stripped. They didn't come this way - they were stripped during the installation. Two of the 1" threads were also stripped. Before you accuse me of not knowing what I was doing - I can tell you that I tighted the bulkhead by hand. But when it was towards the end, it kept on slipping and that's what cause the stripping. I took the bulkhead out to compare it to another bulkhead I had ordered from a different vendor. The other vendor's bulkhead nut fits snuggle onto the thread. The ones from MD had a lot of play. I think it was this poor design that caused the stripping. I have never order bulkheads from MD before - so I don't know if it was just a bad batch or if the brand that MD is using is poorly constructed.

Anyway - since I was in the middle of the building - I ended up just going to a local ACE and purchasing some 3/4" bulkhead (very high quality). One of the 1" bulkhead was ok. The other 1" bulk head was still usuable with some silcon - but I will replace them eventually.

Like I said - this thread is not mean as bash on MD. It is meant as a warning for those who may order bulkheads from MD and a note to MD to check into a possible problem with the brand of bulkhead that they carry. Below is the part number:

Thanks Joseph. Did you get an other report of problems with the bulkheads? I will call on MD for a credit. I actually have to place an order on Monday anyway.

Hi Minh,

I did speak with our supplier a couple of weeks ago and he was not aware of any issues with these bulkheads. Additionally, we have not had other reports of problematic bulkheads (to the best of my knowledge). This should be just an isolated incidence.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

Sincerely,
Joseph

Hope all is well in Bulkhead land. :) Just wanted to put in my two cents... I have ordered Bulkheads (3/4inch, 1inch, and 1.5inch sizes) on several different occasions. Also I have purchased several types of BHs (double threaded and the single threaded types) I havent ever had any problems with the ones that I got from MD. Sorry that you got a couple of duds Minh. :(
Glad that MD could help get it fixed for you. :)

I had ordered some 3/4" and 1" double threaded bulkheads about a month or so back. I guess I should count my lucky stars that I didn't end up with some from the same batch as you, but I am also sorry to hear that you had those problems.... The only issue I have had with products ordered from MD (aside from UPS playing rugby with my packages) was with a tunze magnet holder for the 6100 turbelle that I ordered at the same time. There is a part missing that prevents me from even using the product, but I waited so long to try to use it (again, about a month or so) that I am just getting ready to try to run down the part separately. *sigh*

Actually, I was cleaning out my work area and found a 3/4" bulkhead that had cracked on me when I screwed a fitting into it (hand tight). I had luckily ordered more than I needed and was able to finish the project that day and had completely forgotten about it.

It does appear that there was a quality problem with some bulkheads. If anyone from MD wants, I can dig back through and find the date and shipping # .. seems like I order at least once a month from there... *sigh* :)
