butterflies in reefs

For those of you that have introduced parasites with inverts, did you swish them in separate tank water before placing in the tank? That's always been my theory, but not sure it's good enough.

Not before, but now, yes :) I think it helps.

Man that sucks. Did you cry? I picked up a Muelleri on DD last July after seeing yours, he's my favorite fish. I bet more will show up in the next few months.

I hope so, I couldn't wait and tried a copperband to fill the void and he only lasted two days. That poor little guy was so full of parasites he couldn't stop shaking his head and was scratching all over the place. I immediately started a prazipro treatment but it was too late.

It was a hard three months,to make it worse I lost my muelleri the same day as my earls wrasse. :(

I've introduced ich with snails before. I've also introduced disease with caulerpa in the past. You just can't be too careful with anything wet! The mitratus is beautiful!

Thanks Peter, the Mitratus is doing well in QT with a couple wrasse buddies. He is eating pellets and pretty much everything else I throw at him. I can tell already he is gonna be that abnormally fat fish that won't let anybody else have any food. Hopefully he plays nice in my reef.

Everyones butterflies look fantastic. Butterflies have always been one of my favorites if not my number one favorite genera of fish.

My personal ultimate zenith of butterflies would have to be a forcipiger longirostris, and better yet the dark morph. Has anyone ever kept one of these if anyone has pictures, by all means post them.

I've never actually seen a F. longirostris for sale. Does anyone kno how often if ever they do? I'm told in the wild at least in the Marshall Islands they're actually not that rare, however the dark morph is.

My LFS got a flavissimus, but I noticed that it was a bit weird looking. It was a longirostris!
So after a good while I took ot home, but a few weeks later it died in a severe Mantis attack!! The Mantis was like 6" beast, and it killed most of my smaller (more expensive) fishes...
The longirostros was almost 8" beauty!! Still hurts... :(

Divers den had a couple black phase a while back. Theres a short discussion in this thread somewhere stating that they dont stay that way and end up looking like a normal longnose.

I bought two Chaetodon Octofasciatus a few weeks ago and have been having mixed success. First week went rather aweful. I was happy enough to get them to eat, but their diet was sps skin. Moved them to the frag tank and now they eat a mussel every other day. If I don't put on in for them to pick at, they nip at the frogspawn. I put a piece of purple digi in the frag tank and they don't seem too interested in it, long as they've been fed in the last two days.

Here's a pic:

Anybody have any experience with Spotfin Butterflies? (Chaetodon Occelatus)

Been wanting to try one..

Anyone successfully treat a butterfly with red sores on its mouth (maybe some bacterial infection)? I had a fish develop the same symptoms in my display tank 6-12 months ago. His mouth got worse and worse until he died from not being able to eat. The fish I have now is in qt, and I just added green power to treat but I'm not very hopeful.

I had a Copperband in QT with the same kind of issue, he didn't last two days. Let me know how it goes.

I've had certain butterflies develop red mouths like that during cupramine.

My fish just finished 4 weeks of cupramine, and I noticed the sore so I didn't want to put him into the DT yet. I've moved him to a new qt with a new filter, water, etc...

I've seen some red color on BF's before but I've only seen blister/sores 1 time and that fish didn't make it. I've noticed the red coloration usually goes away once the fish is out of medication. Any ideas about if this has any chance, and what medication (if any) would give him the best chance of fighting this infection?

On a more positive note Fedex delivered an early Easter present.
Already picking at PE mysis :)

After seeing Peter's (SDGuy) and lemonlemons tank I decided to give it a try.

I went and got a mitratus and a burgess buttterfly.

They're both going in a 120 with wrassess and 2 assessors. the mitratus is eating well thanks to Peter's advice. And the burgess is in an acclimation box for a week to prevent aggression.

SO far the mitratus has been good but only time will tell.

I have been eyeing this fish for a while and when the right specimen came along, I jumped on it.

I was actually surprised at the price the LFS was asking.

I'll post pics in a bit

I let my Mitratus go in my reef a couple days ago. So far he has been completely safe, pretty much tasted everything at first but no damage. He eats everything and even fought back with my tangs and showed them he won't be bullied.

Any update's on the Octo's????

I've got a spotfin now, but am having trouble getting him to eat food. He nips at the rocks and food occaisonaly, and some of my palys (theres plenty and hes not doing damage). Any ideas?
