butterflies in reefs

Nitrofuracin Green Powder is another med I will never be without when buying new butterflies.

No. As far as I know, copper is the only thing that works against velvet, and even then, not too well.

After reading through this entire thread I joined RC just so I can comment on it!
My question is concerning two specific butterflyfish I have been having a hard time getting info on. They are the Lemon (or Milletseed) Butterfly and the Mertens Butterflyfish(Chaetodon mertensii).
I looked them up on fishbase.com and according to them they eat algae and small crustaceans, coral is not listed as it is for most other butterflyfish. On liveaquaria they are listed as reef compatible "with caution", the same as dwarf angels. Has anyone had either of these in a reef tank? What were they ok with and what were they not ok with? I am fine with not having the most luscious reef (I couldn't spend that much money on corals I don't think!), but I do want some corals. To me they are kind of like plants in a freshwater aquarium - not the main attraction, I'm a fish person first, but they are beneficial and beautiful, and I would like to keep some, even if I have to work around a specific fishes tastes.

I've been staring at the Chelmon Muelleri on Diver's Den for about a week now, I don't think I can bare it any longer, it's time to pull out the credit card...

Question about Cupramine, if some fish do not tolerate it well why doesn't everyone use hypo-salinity? I use a hypo-salinity qt and recently Prazi Pro in addition, mostly because I don't know any better.

Also, I'm considering the Nitrofuracin Green Powder, comments? It's $40, worth it?

Hypo only works for ich..........sometimes it's hard to identify diseases early & copper wil work on a broader list of parasites.

As far as the muellers................it's the best reef BF out there. Beautiful, hardy, eats aiptasia & no corals or host anenomes.

^ Ahh, that makes sense. For this fish, I'm going to stick with what I know, hypo, Prazi & Nitrofuracin Green (that is, if I can find some) for quarantine.

This is my first Diver's Den purchase, I'm so impressed by their methods and we live 4 hours from the facility! Thinking about taking a tour in August, it's free, but I'm sure we won't leave empty handed.

The Muelleri will arrive Tuesday, which just so happens to be my birthday :celeb1:

The mullers is a nice butterfly and they make a nice birthday present, so have a happy one. I really wanted to get a mulleri given they are somewhat different than the regular cbb, but they weren't available when I was ready and an Aus cbb came up on DD, so I went for it instead.

Here's Mr. Muelleri

Here's Mr. Muelleri

My first impression of the Muelleri: one large and fat butterflyfish, will be the king of our 120 gal. He's not fond of qt, hasn't eaten, but starting to follow food around. Hope he gets over being home sick.

I plan on feeding daily live blackworms, and for this I've been rigging up feeding contraptions so the bff can feed for hours uninterrupted in the main tank. Also, I intend to make a live brine shrimp feeder. McMaster Carr Supply & American Science & Surplus are great resources for those hard to find items.

I wouldn't bother with blackworms unless it won't eat & brine isn't going to do much for fulling the fish up or keeping it long term.

They aren't finicky if healthy. It should be taking food in the next few days & should gorge on fresh frozen scallops, shrimp, clams & mussels from the grocery store.......90% of what I've been feeding mine for nine years. Mysis & any commercial frozen foods it accepts will round out it's diet.

I agree, skip the live blackworms. Mine goes nuts for all meaty seafoods, like Ed mentioned.

I like the idea of feeding worms because they eat worms in the wild.
In addition, I feed all kinds of things: fresh clam, scallop, mysis, cyclopeeze, squid (found in a locally made frozen food) & pellets. Basically whatever it will eat I will feed, which as of right now is nothing. I'll go tempt him some more with scallop. Really neat fish. I cannot wait until he's past qt and in our tank - everything in our 120 is so healthy and growing quickly! The corals absorb more than 40t of Soda Ash and 12t of Calcium Chloride per wk. I'll have to update my build thread..

Why do you guys say skip live black worms? Do you think they aren't healthy or what's your reason for not feeding them?
