Thinking of refinishing the basement. What's the best place to buy a bunch of nice solid 2x4's for a decent price? Does any stores provide a discounted bulk price? Also, is it true Lowes has better 2x4's than homedepot?

Lowes. Depot. All junk you've got to dig through. Lumber yards send junk too unless they know you and are aware that you send the junk back :)

if your doing your basement i would highly recommend metal studs. they are a little more expensive, but it's piece of mind for mold.

Macks lumber yard, their in vally city.you can send back what you dont want too.
Ask to speak with beth, tell her johns drywall sent you.

Agreed. Esp. if you don't consider yourself a carpenter. Much easier for the average person to work with. Either way you decide to go, I'd stay away from HD or Lowes. Carter on 18 in Medina or 84 lumber on rt 82 in columbia will definitely do you better. Prices won't be to different but at least you can get free delivery and decent materials from a yard

Free delivery. I like the sound of that! I'll definitely check them out. thanks

interesting..never thought about metal studs. I like how easy wood is to cut and seems like it would be more affordable. thanks for the advise though.

I use metal studs every day at work. After the house Im buying finally closes i will be framing out my basement with em for sure. Lighter and straighter for sure. They are a little more but they won't burn if anything ever happens!

Correct me if im wrong i swore i read somewhere not to put the metal studs on an exterior basement wall! Plus i will never go to carter lumber again. the first and only time i used them they i swear they sent 2x4s that i could of used for a bow and arrow. Also told them to put wood off to the side and they dropped it right in the middle of the driveway. Go to either h.d. or lowes and pick your own wood out. also active serviceman get 10% off.

Cool, appreciate the advise. Probably better off hand selecting it rather than getting some surprise twists. Did they end up compensating you for those twisters?

Your really not supposed to put any type of stud against the basement walls. It creates a moisture trap and a breeding ground for mold.

Does everyone usually insulate their basement behind the drywall and if so what 'R' value did you go with? Also, are vapor barrier sheets necessary where we live?

That is up to you,but if you do leave it up off the floor 6-12" incase it ever floods.drywall can dry but the insulation wont and will cause mold.also you DO NOT WANT A VAPOR BLOCK,that will also cause mold and moisture. I do drywall for a living and have made thousands over the years fixing stuff because of vapor blocks.

I got a whole bunk from Carter, sent back 40 out of the bunk. I told the guy i wasn't building a log cabin and didn't want to see any with bark still on them.
