Buying used equipment? Overflow box, skimmer, ect

Afternoon,

Anyone got any good resources for buying equipment? In specific im trying to find some good value (not cheap, good value) on some things before i just go order all new stuff. In particular, a lifereef overflow prefilter box and soon a skimmer. Before i go shell 150 bucks and then a good 400-500 i want to make sure im covering my bases.

Im actually building my first sump to put on my existing tank, and im in a budget bind, but i dont want to make shortcuts and have to go back later because i didnt do it right the first time, BUT i want to see if theres some good quality equipment around i can get a deal on

Once you get enough posts and been a member long enough you will be able to view the for sale forum. Until then check out your local Reef Central forum where you will find items for sale by local reefers.

50 sensible posts and 90 days membership to see our forums, because selling is not what we do, generally, and we don't want to be craigslist. In general you can trust used equipment EXCEPT heaters---and light bulbs. Used heaters are potentially dangerous. Used lights are probably worn down and ineffectual. The typical online sales forums may turn up some good gear---people selling whole systems.

But what we can help you with is brand names, sizes, and what works best.

Oh cool, i didnt even realize there was a hidden forum. Ill look forward to that then. Thanks a ton

Yeah ive read a lot of good stuff on lifereefs overflows but i have yet to find anyone selling any of yhem on ebay or any other auction sites. Im in the process of building this sump so if anyone has seen any on there for sale id be interested. I mean a new one from Jeff is around 150 for all the stuff, so im not too worried about that, but ill hit some money in skimmer and stuff. So if anyones got any ideas or id even be interested to an extent if theres any good whole systems for sale

Anyway, thanks for the info!

Buy from RC. I just completed the setup of my 75 gallon and bought 90% of my stuff from here. Saved a lot of $! Sometimes people upgrade too early or just to get the latest and greatest. Fine my me! Happy Reefing!

craigslist, and ebay are also good places until you get to see the selling and buying forums on here

Yes i have. I would love togo that route but i dont know about drilling glass when theres already water and fish in it. I was assuming it was not a realistic possibility, am i wrong and it is doable?

there have been people that have done it with water and fish in the tank by just lowering the water level to below where the holes will be drilled. me personally wouldn't attempt it though, keeping enough water on the bit is gonna make a mess when it is upright, and if anything went wrong and the tank breaks, it's gonna make a bigger mess and you will have to hurry moveing the fish.

Yeah thats what my mindset is. Too worried about the negative possibilities and how disastrous they could be over how easy it could be. I dont think its worth the risk. Next tank i do will def be done that way from the start, but in this case ive got to make due with what i have

There's a lot of things you can find on craigslist, I just picked up 35 pounds of dry Fiji rock for 60 bucks...the deals are out there but you have to look for them and be careful

Patience is your best virtue. Once you get impatient and buy it new, a day later you will come on here and see it for sale for half the price.
