Buying water...

I know most of you probably have your own R/O units, but does anyone else buy water?

If you do, where do you get it and how much is it?

Thank you :) Anna

Before I had an RODI I got my water from Food Lion, depending on how much you need I would think that another reefer could help you out. I could but I would think it would be too much of a drive just for water. I would guess that most LFS store would sell RODI for 50c a gallon but that would just be a guess.

looks as if you got 2 problems... where to get water or buy an ro/di and how in the world to get that big a$$ piece of orange into the bottle :)

I tested the RODI water I have been getting from my LFS and it has a considerable amount of ammonia in it. Which I'm starting to think has been a contributor to my recent challenge of good water quality.

Ade, yes I think Smith Mountain Lake might be a little too far to go for water every week but thank you anyways.

...about the orange slice...someone took the bottle from me and poured it in a glass, which I would have realized I had to do if I hadn't already been drinking for a few hours.

The best bet IMO is to spend the cash on a small Ro/Di unit ... I know from working with Mixed Bed Resin that most of the stores around here leave thier systems running too long with out changing carbons out or checking tds... Which leads to less than stellar quality water .... It's been forever since i've looked for small DI units.. but i'm sure some of the locals could point you in the right direction....

So did you have to drink the contents of the bottle without the orange dropping to the ground? =0) either way .. looks like fun

Thanks Eric :), does anyone have any recommendations for a small RODI unit that would not require altering the plumbing in my apartment... I have a 75g. tank, I only go through about 14 gallons a week with evaporation and water changes.

orrr... would anyone in blacksburg/christiansburg let me buy water from them?

orr, option number 3... that might be completely ridiculous but I'm willing to try.. can I use these on the water I buy to get the ammonia out?

http://www.fishsupply.com/sfm-hb0027.html I have an extra filter or 2 I could stick on a bucket...

I'd be happy to provide RO/DI water if you would like. I have a 75gpd unit that consistently puts out 0tds from an inline meter. I don't have must storage space so I usually only make up 10gal at a time or so, but would be happy to help out.

If you're looking to buy a unit check out bulkreefsupply.com they have some good prices, my unit has filters/membrane from them. If you do decide to buy let me know and I'd be happy to split shipping as well so I can get more prefilters.

I put a Y-splitter on the cold water line that feeds my washing machine. The waste line empties into the washing machine drain as well.

You can't get any easier than that! :D

Josh that is basically the most awesome idea I've ever heard....seriously... I'm really excited about that suggestion.

John, I might be hitting you up for some water even though Josh's idea is fantastic. I'll have to pull some doubles to gather the funds for my own set up and in the mean time I would be more than happy to pay you for some gallons every week, I have two 7 gallon containers that I use, I could leave them with you over night or for a couple days or however long you need. Is it okay if I send you a private message about it and we work out the details in a week or so? I'm wrapped up in finals at the moment.

Thank you guys so much!

I did the exact same thing as Josh, they have the fittings you need at Home Depot and they are cheap. Less than $10 for sure. I even got a little valve so I can turn the RO/DI off independently of the washer.

I have mine setup the same way as well. A Y adapter on the washing machine faucet, step that down to poly line, and to the RO unit, I put a second valve at the unit so that it is easier to turn on and off, and one at the end of the fill hose just to avoid drips and such. I don't have a sink by the washer so I just fill the buckets on top of the washer so if it overfills it goes into the washer tub and not on the floor.

if you are still looking for water in bburg, i can spot you with as much as you need till you get yours setup. i'm near the kroger on main street.

thank you for all of the great advice! After putting it off for awhile I finally bit the bullet and bought an RO system! I'm pretty excited to never have to carry water up the steps to my apartment again! :)
