CA Reactor media went mud....

Afflicted Reefer
Has anyone had thier reactor media literally turn to white mud?
I was banging on the outside of my Geo 624 to settle the coral and it totally collapsed. Been about 5-6 mo since i added media. I use super course ARM. pulled it apart to reach in and find total mud... of course after i launched a bunch of coral snow into the reef.

Yes, but only once have I seen it in person. For a reactor with arm extra coarse to do that it must have clogged and had a crazy low ph. Otherwise the dissolved media makes it's way to the display.

I've run that media at 6.0ph without any issues melting.

FWIW that media is best suited for massive reactors on 1000gal+ systems. I'd switch to regular ARM. It will give the reactor more capacity and you won't need to drive it as hard.

well... when I say super course I mean about thumbnail to pinky mail chunks... I run it at ph 6.5 w/ w/ carbon doser. calibrated probe about 4 mo ago....

It went to mud due to the pH being too low. My guess is that your probe was a bit out of calibration and the pH was lower than you would have expected. Try running a bit higher pH and increase the effluent rate through the reactor. You will accomplish the same thing with less chance of turning your media to mud.

100% agree with this. The only way the media can turn to mud is if the pH is too low. Regardless of what the probe was reading the pH was too low.
