Cabo's BC29 to Reefer 170 Migration and Tank Build

Well, picked up the ATI sunpower 6x24W today and hooked it up.

Just a "little" bit of a difference.....lol

I figure I had the Kessil @ 75% at it's highest point, so I set this guy to ramp for 1 hour in the AM to 60% and stay there for now. I'm going to play around with the dimming/timing later today or tomorrow. Just wanted to get a feel for the fixture.

One thing's for sure, it lights the whole display tank up more fully (to be expected of course) and showed me a few more aiptasia I need to kill off......

curious to see what your longer term review of the fixture is. I am really considering getting one to suppliment the kessils on the next build.

Well right now, I wish it was the 4 bulb version and not the 6. I have an idea to run a 4 bulb version with my kessil......the 6 just takes up too much space.

Bah! 6 bulb or bust! I guess for a small tank 4 is okay, but on anything larger I wouldn't do less than 6. And 6 gives you more color mixing options as well.

Glad you're liking it though cabo. They definitely look and feel "sterile", but it's fine, and they're good lights no question.

Ok, so I really don't like the stand/mount I got for it as it takes up too much "rim" space on the sides (screws up my frag rack too). So I'm thinking of picking up 2 of the Halo LED arm/mounts since they're fixed, not goose neck like the Kessil and using them. I can mount them on the back glass, on each side of the overflow.

My only real concern is with 2 of them supporting about 12lbs (the fixture plus bulbs). I'm pretty sure the arms will be ok, but the stress on the back glass of supporting the weight might be an issue. Guess I'll email Red Sea and see what they think.

Repaired parts for my skimmer came in yesterday. Installed them and re-installed the Skimz skimmer....now I have to let it break in all over again, but that goes with the territory.

Now the question comes up, what to do with the SCA-302.....I might just keep it as a backup, but it really is a little too big for my tank, it was just one I had wanted to try out for a while and I could get it quickly when I needed one. It does pull some of the nastiest stuff I've seen out of my tank once it broke in though.

Actually, if it wasn't for 1 major annoyance, I'd probably keep the SCA and sell the Skimz. The air silencer is attached to the collection cup lid. That's just a pita when you want to clean the lid........which for me, is every time I empty the cup.

Just add a quick connect like on the life reef skimmers. I like that design on the life reef since it also stops overflow should the cup fill and the air line would then intake the fluid first.

Uh-huh.....I just have to figure out how to do that. I think I'm gonna go walk around the hardware store and see what I can come up with.

Aaaaaand this is why I hate buying used gear unless it's from someone I know.

Came home from work yesterday to find the ATI Sunpower only lighting up 2 bulbs. After some testing, I'm pretty sure it just a relay. So I ordered 2 new ones since I'm taking it apart, I might as well replace both.

Good thing I still have my Kessil.

I guess one good thing is that "old school" lights are pretty common and easy to fix. :D

It is ALWAYS something isn't it. But you are right in that the older tech is much easier to get your hands on both parts and guides to make the fixes. Newer tech is much more closed off to us DIY types...

Doesn't have to be if you guys stop going with LED pucks/integrated PCBs :D

Sorry to hear you're having trouble though Cabo! Good luck, hopefully the fix really is that simple.

Well I tried to "come back to the fold" and you see what happened right? ;)

Well, it's official. Some kinda crab hitchhiked in on something and is now eating my acans.

Now I have to track this little sob down. I might be easier to just pull all my LR and replace it with marco rock (since I have 30 lbs. that I've already "soaked" for weeks in RO). I was going to start adding it in a little at a time. Hmmmmmm.

Well, I was hoping that Soulpatch was wrong and that I don't have black bugs eating my acans........turns out he's probably right.

I dipped all my acans (colonies/frags) in Bayer last night. In the 2 rinse buckets I saw a lot of little black "dots" after shaking the coral off in the rinse water. I don't have a magnifying glass, but I'm pretty sure that was a bunch of dead bugs.

Also, after the dip/rinse and return to my tank, they all looked much happier and ready to eat! Today, I ran home at lunch to see how they were in the light and they're more open than they have been in a while. So I guess that's a good thing.

Sooooo, I'm dosing the whole tank over the weekend with interceptor to get the rest of them. Just need to move the hermits/shrimp/snails to the pico tank so they don't croak.
