Cabo's BC29 to Reefer 170 Migration and Tank Build

Ok, so since I'm dealing with these stupid bug issues, I figure I'll go ahead and tackle everything and just get it over with.

So, I'm having some flow issues.

Setup:
-Gyre XF130 on left side glass, mounted horizontally, pulsing towards the right side @ 30/20 percent for 1 hour and then 40/25 percent for 1 hour (alternating) throughout the day. It drops to 20% at night for a steady flow until morning.

Issues:
-Still seems to be beating the hell out of my frags (rack hangs from the side of the glass via a hook over the side. This can be resolved by me just axing the rack and putting frags on the rocks....so not too bit a deal I guess

-Flow is still limited. I've rearranged my rock about 10 times now and I still can't get the flow the way I want it. I think you're always going to have a couple of dead spots (in a cube anyway) but it seems that I beat up the coral across the top and on the right side and get almost no movement on the left.

-Apex control is still finicky. No matter what I do, I can't get the script for controlling the gyre/icecap within the Apex to read properly. It displays 76/82 percent consistantly when it's supposed to be set at 40/25 and 30/20. I've asked Coralvue and they say the setup seems ok, so talk to Neptune. So I've been trying different ideas from folks on their forum, but it's still not right.

Soooo, as much as I like the gyre, I'm debating going back to RW4's for now (since I already have them) and if I can get them the way I want, I might switch over to the WAV's. I still think the WAV's are too big for my tank, but my it does have a black back and I can put one on each side of the overflow box and angle them in towards the middle (that's how I'm going to set up the RW's). They won't be too much of an eye sore that way.

It's either that, or add another gyre and icecap control interface and put one on each side of the overflow box (like I would with the RW's or WAV's) and mount them vertically. That should allow for good flow around the whole outside of the tank and cause some nice turbulence in the middle.

From a financial point of view, the RW's and then maybe WAV's make more sense. You figure $40 for the Jebao/Apex interface (already have the RW4's), or $500 for the WAV set VS. another $320 for a second gyre and icecap. Plus if I move away from the gyre, I can sell off the gear to help offset the new pumps (Gyre130, icecap, battery backup).

So what's everyone think? I'm open to suggestions.

You would want the jbwave as opposed to the apex adapter as you get more features...

I think I am basically sold still on the WAV for the next tank. Going larger I will need the flow and they can be angled as opposed to the mp40s. I will put the gyre in the new tank as well to have some additional flow and leave the rw4s I have now in the cube...

I think all in all what you are looking for and since you like features like me you might as well bite the bullet and get the WAV units. Figure a minimum of 150 for the used gyre, another 80 for the icecap and another 70 or so for the battery backup. Right there you have 300 of the 500 accounted for......

Ha! See? That's what I was looking for.....someone to help convince me!

I think I'm pretty much headed that way, my only concern is that I've read that several folks have tried to use them on larger tanks than mine. Like 60 Gal cubes (keep in mind, mine's only a 34 Gal) and they say that even at 1% their seeing too much flow.

Yep, just did. I have control questions about the gyre posted over on Neptune's forums too, but I guess that's moot now. I just pulled it and put the RW4's in for now.

Read your thread what do you do as a job lol you just buy things instantly makes me wonder if you're a brain surgeon lol

define big....

Make enough to do as I please mostly though I have had to wait some on my tank purchase. Throwing the 8K down at once was not seen lightly by the wife...

I can do statistical analysis all day, but advanced calculus and the other non-practical maths (to me) were my downfall from pursuing engineering.

You couldnt get calculus but you understood clustering, regression, ect? Typically those good in statistics are also very good in calculus...

We typically struggle heavily with items like geometry and physics

3D conic shapes are my downfall right now lol

It was the geometry that was in calculus (sine cosine tangent etc.). It just wasn't practical since I'm not an electronics engineer (the only thing I know those are used in).

Yeah I'm either doing electrical engineering or becoming an electrician haha either way I'm hoping I don't have to worry about my tank habits

Well, I pulled the gyre and installed the 2 RW-4's, running them in anti-sync mode @ about 50% power. Each positioned on the back wall, on opposite sides of the overflow box, angled so they'll "hit" about the middle of the front glass.

Just went home to check everything out at lunch (and with the lights on) and everything looks much happier. Even the pipe-organ and frogspawn are more open than usual. Now it could have something to do with my dosing my tank with interceptor Saturday and killing off many of the pests in the tank, or it could have something to do with the flow. Hard to really say I guess. But I can say that things seem to be going in the right direction.

Now, do I get rid of my gyre stuff or try mounting it vertically again and play with the settings.....decisions, decisions.

So you got the shipment Saturday. Awesome. Glad it got to you and is helping.

If the 2 RWs are at 50% then I would probably try ordering in the JBwave and running that before going to the WAV since you have the pumps. And if the WAV still calls to you send me the JBwave and I will ensure it gets used. HA HA

Yeah, dose 1 of 3 is done and in the books now. Thanks again! (I thought I PM'd you, but just checked and didn't.....oops......sry bro)

The JBwave does look cool. I use CLI at work all the time, so tweaking the pumps shouldn't be a big deal.
