CADlights 39g Pro build thread

I didn't have/notice that problem.

did you use white or chrome eggcrate? Also, there's a directionality to the eggcrate grid. Put the wide edge down and more light will go into the tank and less into the ceiling.

Finally, paint the top of the eggcrate black :D

Paint it black, ehh? lol Wide edge down, damn it. Guess I have to change that up. I dont need it on till tomorrow so Ill play with it tonight.

My Euro-Reef NS 3-0 2p Nano skimmer arrived today!

First impressions are that it is very well built. The packaging was very good. Everything wrapped up in bubble wrap. Took a couple of minutes to unpack.

Assembly is very straight forward. Instructions are great.
They even sent 2 additional impellers. The instructions with the extra impellers are that these impellers have smaller diameters to reduce foam in the case that there are large amounts of organics in the water that could cause over foaming. Nice to have.

Adjustment is very easy.

The skimmer fits snuggly into the skimmer compartment of our 39g pro sumps. They couldn't have gotten anything much bigger in. Maybe 1/4 of an inch room to spare. Plenty of spare room on top to adjust the skimmer upwards if necessary.

I'm excited to see how it performs, but initially this thing creates an immense amount of foam and bubbles in the tube. No micro bubbles noticeable in the main tank. I'll probably open a seperate thread with some pictures later this week with an update.

I was hoping you'd post an update today. Thanks! My skimmer is due for delivery tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to move tank and stand to their permanent location this weekend, and start final plumbing.

I wanted to feel that I made at least some progress this past weekend, so I mixed up a batch of stock salt water. First time I've done that in three or four years. Just like old t times. :)

My biggest stumbling block now is the rock and sand. I decided to go with a base of Marco rocks, since his web site says that he's due a Fiji delivery tomorrow. I just hope my order gets processed before his stock runs out again.

CADlight Skimmer

CADlight Skimmer

I see in an earlier post several people had issues with the 39g Pro skimmer not being high enough to allow the discharge to go over the glass separator.
What did you folks do to overcome this?
I have the same issue and think my 2 options are 1, raise the skimmer with egg crate or glass/plastic or 2, extend the discharge tube.

Are there others I am not seeing and does changing the height change the efficiency of the unit?

I used egg crate to raise the skimmer. I couldn't find tubing that would fit over the tubing on the skimmer as it seems to be an usual size.

Skimmer plumbing size

Skimmer plumbing size

This is what I got from CADlights about the skimmer plumbing a couple months ago. An non-standard application, if not a non-standard size :)

the skimmer sizes are tubing sizes, so if you use standard 3/4" aquarium tubing it should fit right over it. you can put one side on over the mouthpiece of the return and then it canslip into a 3/4"

I did exactly what ArtC suggested. I used tubing to raise the return. I do not like the ball valve it came with though. It seems hard to adjust. I am going to try to find a new one.

Should have provided the whole CADlights reply to begin with...

Gate valves offer the best control for fine tuning. they are widely used in all injection skimmers like MTC, PM, ETSS etc. and also pin wheel injections too like ours. typically you would need the fine tuning option for skimmers that are skimming over or close to its full capacity. we have matched a skimmer that is around double sized of the tank so it should skim fine. ball valves are not as fine as gates, so if you choose one then the gate valve would be best. the only problem is that gate valves typically take up substantially more space than the ball valves.

But even a decent ball valve is going to be much easier to adjust than the original equipment valve.

Thanks guys,
ArtC, if I remember correctly, you used your overflow for a DSB! How is it going as such? Critters installed to stir, burrow? Enough flow over surface?
Can't think of anything else but primarily is it acting like a DSB in your DT but on a smaller scale?

The Bee

Sort of a self-regulated DSB...

Fill overflow with sand to my initial guess of 7" from the top. If there is too much sand, it gets sucked through the Durso. That lowers the level of the sand until the Durso can almost, but not quite, suck up any more sand. That's the maximum current you can get across the DSB :) Wouldn't do any harm to use a filter sock (or sweat sock) during this process.

I did seed it with some live sand from my club. Hard to tell what is living in the sand now - for some reason I put the overflow against the wall...

Hard to tell how effective it is, other than nitrates are zero and hair algae died off (and I'm pretty sure it was bryopsis).

No algae growing in overflow. (I don't need the cooling fan to cool, but it helps keep the light out of the overflow.)

Ok, this is a bit off topic, but I have had this book marked since the beginning and I just noticed it had been moved to the DYI section out of the nano section...when did that happen, lol?

hey all,
I just got my CAD 39 yesterday YEA! Signature series though.
I just have one question, is it normal for the fan in the light to run 24/7? It was on the min I plugged it in and never shuts off.
That might be normal, just seams strange to me.
Thanks,
David

New to me

Mine runs for a few minutes after the lights go off, presumably to dissipate the remaining heat. Definitely doesn't run 24/7.

I asked the moderators to move the thread back to Nanos, since there isn't significant DIY or mod content in it, and it hides the thread from the intended audience of new 39G users who are just trying to figure out how to put the thing together so that it runs. We'll see what (if anything) they say.

FYI, I noticed a nice, unexpected benefit to running the new Euroreef 39g skimmer instead of the stock CAD one.... it frees up some sump space. Since I don't now have that skimmer outflow pipe restricting access to the left front sump chamber, there's now room to fit a TLF reactor and PH. That in turn gives me back the center 'fuge' chamber, which I'd planned on using for the reactor, since I'm going with a HOB fuge.

Now I can 'play' some more. My initial thought is to explore the idea of a nano algae turf scrubber, since I spotted an interesting thread on the subject here on RC yesterday, linking to this article:

Thanks ArtC,
I finally just unplugged it? I have an e-mail into Ken at ocenreeflections on this, but have not heard back yet on this.
Thanks for the info,
David
