CADlights 39g Pro build thread

Crap, how did I miss that..... going there now!!!

Order placed. That's pretty much the last piece of the hardware puzzle. I painted the tank back over the weekend, and it's sitting in the garage right now, filled with tap water for a leak test. Once the skimmer arrives (and the in-laws go back home after their holiday visit), I'll be ready to go.

Of course that still leaves the part that really has me puzzled, i.e. what live rock to use for this build. More on that, later.

It's rated for 20 gallons? The site says it's designed for the JBJ 12. I'd love to see what ya'll think when you get it broken in.

The solana folks are eagerly awaiting this one too.

CC, are you going to silicon any rock to the back wall or just leave it black?

I'm really not sure. Probably I'll just leave it black. In any case, I need to keep room for the intake and output plumbing on the HOB Aquafuge.

Hey guys, good to see a cadlights thread going. Just got my tank up and running, though i got the cadlights complete setup. Its the sig series without the uv, canopy, and that ato that I had no use for. Tank looks great, running smooth for now, but I havent turned the skimmer on yet, so we will see then. Love the fact that Im 20 minutes away from Eddie's warehouse!

How high should the water level be on the skimmer, and should the return pipe into the fuge be fully submerged? Bout to get this thing started but I need to add some RO water in here to lower the salinity a touch. Need to know if I should take some out or not. Right now the return is submerged and the water is about 3/4 up on the main skimmer column.

Yeah, seriously.. So far so good though, so I havent had to take advantage of that yet. Waiting for my cycle to begin and end. lol Glad to know theres a forum for people who have gone through it all with this tank. I love it so far, the 39g is gorgeous.

Skimmer question... Its skimming real wet, my skimmer cup filled with water. First off, anybody with the signature series that has the fuge in the back? What should my water level be at back there?

39 Signature

39 Signature

This is kind of the '39G Pro' thread, so probably not a lot of expertise here with the Sig. But it's not uncommon for skimmers to be wacky the first couple of days due to various manufacturing 'contaminants' in the skimmer, piping, etc, etc.

Dump the cup out, and wait it out.

And look for or start a Sig thread. I'm only the 'expert' here because I started the thread :)

haha.. ok, so I think I got the water level in the back where I want it to be, but now its just a matter of adjusting the skimmer valve to where it should be. Its the same skimmer so I think you can help me with this. Where should the bubble level in the cylinder thats in the skimmer cup be at? Im trying to adjust the valve to where it needs to be right now because clearly I was running it way too wet.

'Typically', bubble level about half way up the throat. But a better test is what skimmate is produced.

CADlights expects the skimmer to be run with the valve wide open, but I had to close mine slightly to get any product.

If you are running wide open and still too wet, you might try removing the valve entirely until things settle down. Even wide open the valve restricts the flow somewhat.

If your liverock is still curing, there may just be too much of a bio-load for the design of the skimmer. To reduce the efficiency of the skimmer you need to reduce the water pressure or the air injection. Can't really reduce the water flow other than standing the skimmer on something to increase the static pressure. Might try putting an air valve on the skimmer to reduce the amount of air injected.

Thats what I did, added in that cylinder piece that restricts the air somewhat. Looks like its better now, stopped skimming real wet, and I think the rock has finished curing. My nitrites are now 0 and nitrates are about 25, so I think my cycle is finishing as soon as I can get these nitrates down. Still a little wet but its a nice green tea color so its ok. It'll calm down. Thanks man. Hope all is well with your tank.

Hey Art, are you still using that egg crate lid? I have to make one today, and was looking into the egg crate or some kind of plastic mesh. Im gonna take a ride to home depot in a few, just wanted to see how it was working out for you.

It's good. They don't make the egg crate as strong as they used to, but it's fine for the job. Same stuff at both HD and Lowes.

So far, I use it when I put new fish in so I don't get any first night jumpers. Looking to add some fairy wrasses, so then I'd go full time. At that point, I'd have to do something so I could feed the fish without pulling the whole lid off (unlike the glass lid, it covers the entire tank surface.)

If you figure your fish can fit through the 1/4" holes, then you might put some coarse plastic screen over or under the egg crate. (Don't want to restrict air circulation or block too much light)

The egg crate lid is done, I used a dremel as well. Only problem is it is so reflective that it makes it hard to look over the top of the tank without being blinded. Do you use anything to block the gap between the light and the front?
