I'm not too worried about it anyways...they still seem to be one of the best out there...What are the dimensions of the skimmer area of the sump ArtC?

6.25" x 6.5" in my sump.

Art, what model return pump was included in your package? My stuff was delivered yesterday, and the supplied pump is a "Lifetech AP5300", which I know nothing about. I figure I'll pick up a replacement I know to be a solid performer and keep the Lifetech as a spare. I did end up buying a VorTech MP20 for tank current, so I may do as you did and downsize the return flow a bit.

IIRC, the AP5300 is what I got. Worked fine, but overpowered and used too much sump space. Replacing it saved me some dBs and gave me room for a phosphate reactor.

Here's the standard AP5300 return pump in the sump. Uses the whole return chamber - can't turn it sideways. A Mag is half that size and leaves room to install a reactor.

Yeah, sump space is certainly at a premium. I decided to go with an Oceanrunner 2500. Once that arrives, I'll see just what else I can cram into that sump chamber. I'm thinking I'll put the pH and temp probes there at least. I'm still not sure about a spot for a heater though. Nothing seems ideal. I'm considering going with an in-line heater on the return.

Not good... not good at all. I started to assemble the stand this afternoon, only to find a that the back panel has a couple of serious cracks. Unlike the chip in the tank, this is a problem, as it's load bearing. There's no way I'd risk putting a tank on it the way it is.

I've emailed C.A.D. for a replacement.

Now, THAT'S some impressive customer service. Just a few minutes after I sent the email and posted here, I got a very nice response from Eddie at Cadlights. They'll be sending a replacement stand panel.

He mentioned that they're dropping DHL as their shipper, which I think is a very wise move.

Dropping DHL would be an EXCELLENT move on Eddie's part. When I bought my 39gal sig series tank and stand, it took 3 different trys to ship me a tank. I live in Oregon and DHL broke 2 tanks. Completely shattered. On the third try, we had to use Fed-X and do it overnight. Big $$$!!! Eddie split the increased shipping with me. DHL sucks!!!

What IS that mystery pipe?

What IS that mystery pipe?

I was going to replace the skimmer's Rio twist valve (which is almost impossible for adjusting a skimmer) with a more usable ball or gate valve.

But none of the pipe at Lowes fit the skimmer elbow, and I can't find any markings on the elbow to tell me what standard it is. By the time I left, I was thinking "metric?"

Anybody recognize it? It's black rather than Sched 80 grey.

Any luck fitting a ball valve to the skimmer? Seems like a very desirable mod. Where did you end up putting your heater? (Oh, for a bit more sump space.)

I've not made much progress on my own build. I can't do any real setup or plumbing until I get the stand replacement panel from CAD. That leaves me far too much time to think of all the 'fun' things I can add!

Hey ArtC...I'll PM you a link for any ball valves you may need...I'm not sure if I am allowed to post a direct link in here so if anyone else needs the link pm me.

What are the dimensions of the refugium?

It just fits in the cabinet!

What are you trying to do? Overall dims, or individiual chambers...

just the individual refugium chamber in the middle of the sump. I'm trying to see if a reactor I have will fit into it.

73603sump_diagram-med.jpg

10.5" internal front to back

Left chamber 6.25", center (between lower baffles) 5 3/8", R: 6.0"

No promises that yours will be exactly the same - I don't know if Eddie uses a ruler or just builds them from memory.

If it helps, I have a 2 little fishies phosphate reactor that I hang off the front of the sump. With the sump pushed to the back wall of the stand there is just enough room for the stand doors to close without hitting the reactor. I put it in front of the return pump chamber. Saved a lot of room in the sump.

Good news. I needed the sump to be a bit bigger for my reactor than what was posted, but then I remembered that the sump is now 12G and not 9G. I had a long look and found the dimensions of the bigger sump and they will work perfectly.

UPS is the shipper now, unfortunatly they managed to break my tank (just recieved it today), semi disappointing although I'm not mad yet.

FYI FWIW- DHL is stopping ALL domestic shipping options at the end of the year.. I guess they figured out that they suck too! Just saw an Email about it from our Communications Department...
