CADlights 39g Pro build thread

cool, good luck. i actually went and bought some, but i failed to replace them because when i tried to unscrew the hinge, the screw came out coated in a wax-like material from the stand. very weird. so, i'm going to have to stuff the hole full of toothpicks or something and then screw it back in.

Hey Gang :)

It's been awhile since any updates - Things are going well. I'll have to get a new FTS shot. The only significant change is CA/ALk supplementation. I've been using BRS 2-part with BRS peristaltic dosing pumps with success, but my high demand requires such large amounts (~120 ml each daily), I've been dealing with salinity creep.

Just this morning I bit the bullet and went GEO

  • GEO 612 w/TE Course Media
  • AquariumPlants digital CO2 regulator
  • another PM1 w/pH probe for the Apex
  • Aqualifter to feed the reactor.

I hated the expense on a system with a total of only about 70 gallons (CADPRo, sump and FT), but hopefully it will provide many years of service on future, larger systems.

incidentally, how in the world are you dosing 120ml of 2 part per day?! that is CRAZY high!

i thought i was dosing a lot at 18ml/day! also using BRS 2-part and BRS doser (the 1.1ml/minute version). great products!

Wow, I haven't posted here or on Nano-Reef.com in a looonnnggg time.

It's good to see that many of the long time 39CAD owners are still around. It took a while to catch up reading. Your tanks are still looking great guys!

It's funny to read that CAD is still having QA and customer support issues. Pretty sad, as they are sweet looking tanks.

mark, good to see you back!

how are the horsies?

It's a TON of 2-part. I go through a gallon of each in less than a month, hence the move to a Ca Rx. In addition to the CADPro which also contains two very large clams, I also have a very densly stocked Frag tank plumbed to the same sump. Sorry for the older, poor-quality photos. I need to take some current pics...

Some of the Frags from the FT have been moved to my Desktop Nano...

So demand should begin lessening.

I'm really loving the long narrow shape of my desktop tank (36" X 8" X 9") and am considering doing a 8' version of the same as a room divider - something on the order of 96" X 18" X 18" - ~135 gallons. That shallow, I'm hoping I could do the whole thing rimless.

I've got a bit more planning to do before I pull the trigger, but figured the GEO 612 investment would pay off with the larger build.

Still waiting on the AquariumPlants CarbonDoser digital regulator and have to grab a 5# CO2 cylinder (which should fit nicely in the Frag tank CadPro cabinet beside the Geo) but it's progress :D

nice set up! Should make things much easier and more stable.

I still have my MRC reactor shelved because I don't have a spot to put it at right now.

I keep meaning to set it up but just can't find the time.

Do you need a pH controller on the geo or does it recirc the CO2?

I had to put an effluent chamber off mine because I couldn't maintain the pH because of the older unit. The effluent chamber fixed that issue though.

The GEO is recirculating - The goal is getting it dialed-in with the electronic regulator, then just use the effluent pH probe managed by the apex as a fail-safe.

I picked up a 5lb CO2 tank today - just waiting on the carbon-doser regulator. Should be able to put the pieces together this weekend.

I'm looking forward to ditching the 2-part :)

tivo here!
I'm on a droid x. I started mine with 40 bubbles per minute and tuned it to roughly 55 for me my old system. Your demand will be greater so your starting point should be slightly higher.

Happy reefing

sweet! Just keep testing the effluent until its dialed in.

Saw that you're going to use Tropic Eden media. I used the coarse ARM with great results but I'm always willing to entertain others. Let us know how that media works out for you.

finally hard plummed the return. I now have perfect flow from the returns. Very happy!

sorry for the (huge) bad 2nd pic. I attached another reefers pic so you can see what I did (exactly the same as 1st pic).

Actually...sad story. In March, of last year, I lost every one of my seahorses in just 2 weeks time. I still don't know what caused that to happen. My CAD tank had my 2 adults and I had over 150 juvies in 3 tanks in my basement. There must have been some type of cross contamination, but I don't know what as I had a very careful and extensive daily routine. Apparently, not careful enough.

The losses kind of took my interest in the hobby with them. I shut down all of my nursery tanks, but kept the CAD and my 29 biocube going as I still had inhabitants in them (only inverts / corals in the CAD though). I decided to add a fish into the CAD, so I bought a Flame Angel a month ago and it's doing well.

It's hard to believe that my biocube has been running for 2- 1/2 yrs and my CAD has been going nearly 2 years.

sorry to here that-sucks!

Any ideas on the cause? pH shift, rapid orp change, bacterial bloom etc.?

Did you notice any cloudy water right before the die off?

I honestly don't know. If I had to guess, I would say it was bacterial (possibly introduced by brine hatching / enriching). But, my process didn't change and I was having success with juveniles for a good amount of time. As a matter of fact, my offspring losses where greatly reduced for weeks right before the disaster.

There was no cloudy water either.

Although seahorses are, by far, my favorite aquarium inhabitants I've had, I think I'll stick with fish and inverts for a while...they're so much easier. :)

What did you end up selling it for?
I'll bet someone got a great deal! Great job with the overflow mods. Looking forward to seeing the artisan when its up and running..

Happy reefing
