CADlights 39g Pro build thread

Hi MarkL,

All is schedule 40 stock (at least thats what I got). I dont run the hofer setup but it should be simple. One of the pics I posted was actually a cut away view from another reefer who had set up the return the way I have it now. The hofer just happened to be in the pic. Sorry for the confusion!

The i.d.s on the pipes are 1" and 1/2". The accessories that CAD sends with the tank are not high end fittings but work well. I wanted a beefy return bulkhead so I opted for this: http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewi...1127&ctype=2&gclid=CJWv1fb1zqkCFQFvbAodPiShLg. The bulk head shown is sched 80 which is thicker walled than sched 40. I had alot of play on the holes on my tank so I knew that the 80 would work.

So that pipe that you got for the hofer is too thick to fit into the stock CAD bulkhead-right?

If so then you would need sched 80 bulkheads as shown in the link. The catch is that The drain hole may be too tight for sched 80 since it's thicker o.d. I can't confirm that because I'm still using the stock sched 40 bulkhead fitting that came with my system.

I would suggest to pick up a couple sched 80 (1" and 1/2") bulkheads from BRS or MD and see if they fit. I'm sure the return will fit since mine did, but the drain bulkhead may or may not.

edit: The bulkhead fitting shown in the link will require a 1/2" male threaded/ barbed fitting to attach the vinyl tubing.

The pvc appears to be metric in size. 40x2mm OD is 40mm and I am assuming the 2mm is the width of the wall. At the moment, I am trying to find some type of an adaptor that will convert it over into inches.

If all else fails then I may end up looking for a new bulkhead like you suggested. I left a message with Eddie to see if he may have any suggestions.

may be faster to just p/u a 2 ft length of Sched 40 1/2" and a 2ft L sched 40 1" at HD or Lowes rather than waiting on Eddie. Should cost less than 5 bucks.

Depending on how busy Eddie is, you may not get a reply right away.

If your not in a rush then by all means wait.

Thanks Tivo for the replies.

I am not sure if I quite get what your saying. The return isnt really my issue as I am happy with it set up. The problem lies in the Drain pipe only. the pipe itself is over 1.5 (40mm or ~1.57") inches in outside diameter. I dont see how getting a 1 inch pipe would help since it wouldnt seal.

What looks like the easiest thing to do may be to buy 1 1/4 and sanding the outside til it can be squeezed and cemented into the bulkhead. It shouldnt be more then a mm or 2 of material to be removed.

sorry,

i was referring to getting a sched 40 1"i.d. pipe (1 1/4 o.d.) and placing it in the sched 40 bulkhead fitting (if its sched 40).

didn't realize that you had no issues with the return so my bad.

wouldn't surprise me if eddies guys sent metric.

Great! I am happy you like my old tank. Nice selling it to you. Wow, nice job with the scape. I am keeping all my other components (including phos reactor) for when I set up my Artisan.

Hey guys,

I just bought this tank (only came with tank and stand, also a sump but it isn't cadlight i think). Anyways I'm excited to set this up, since it is going to be my first tank. But unfortunately, I plan to move in 2 months, so there is no point in setting it up now. But I'd like to plan everything and get things ready so I can get it up as soon as I move in.

I want to keep SPS and some reef safe fish mostly. How strong of a pump would I need, and what is a good skimmer? Also, will I need additional equipment to create more flow?

Thanks

I use the tunze 1073.040 variable flow

you could also use the 1073.020

eheim 1260

sicce syncra 3

many options but depends on budget, how much heat you can deal with, noise etc.

As for the skimmer, you would need to figure out budget and space. Many options there too.

Things have been going well so far. I now have salt water in the tank and started my cycle. I made a Hofer and it has been working quite well and I have no noise in the overflow.

My only issue is the noise of the water going into the sump.. Even with a filter sock I can hear air bubbles coming thru. Given our limited space in the stand, I was wondering if anyone has tried the Reverse Durso or similar ideas to try and bleed off the air before it crashes into the bottom of the sump.

My drain line is hard plumbed and the water exists below the water level. I also tried drilling some holes in the bottom of the pipe to help with the air but this didnt seem to help.

If anyone has pictures that would be great as well!

i have the artisan tank from cadlights and my overflow make a snoring sound, you had that problem?

and for now with the return into the sump i put a smaller towel over the sock and first baffle and eliminates the noise.

I wouldnt say it was a snoring sound but more of a waterfall trickling sound. Once I raised up the water high enough so it didnt fall from the teeth as far that noise disappeared. I do slightly hear the noise from the sump in the airline tubing coming from the hoffer. I would suspect if you have the durso setup the airline from that could sound similar.

The reason I went with the hofer setup was purely due to the fact the plumbing I had received was too large to fit into the overflow. I suspect they sent the artisan pvc not the Pro. Either way, before I even got the tank, in order to make more room for my heater, I was considering the Hofer setup.

I purchased this skimmer from Aquacave for my 60 gal tank.
The quality is way above average and the pump is silent. Can't comment on the performance as my tank is not running yet. My buddy uses SKIMZ SM 161 and is extremely happy with his.

Hi Ralph,

It looks like a quality build! Not too sure yet on the performance yet as there are only a few short threads available right now on it since it's so new to the States. I've seen some vids and the performance looks pretty good. Only thing that confuses me is that I've seen pics of the SM121 with a tall bubble box and a short bubble box (like in the pic above). Is yours similar to the pic? The other I was looking at was one that someone was selling and the bubble box appeared to be at least 4 inches tall.

heres a pic of the one with the taller bubble box

Strange!

It was advertised as the 121 but looks more like the 161

Cant beat >500lph at 12 watts. Thats even better than my 9410.

Tivo, I would have never noticed that if you didn't point it out.
Mine has taller bubble plate chamber, about 3" tall.
I purchased mine based on my friends recommendation. He went through 5 skimmers last year looking for the perfect skimmer 'till he saddled on the Skimz.

Mine looks just like this one:

probably just a show prototype in the first pic then. They usually dress them up a bit and take photos from different angles to get a certain affect. Your pic looks good and I like the appearance of the larger cup. The first photo looks smaller but could just be the angle.

Very nice! Keep us updated when you start cycling so we can see what it does when it beds in.

Happy Reefing!
