CADlights 39g Pro build thread

i don't want to answer for tivo, but i'm fairly certain he never had the pump you have. neither did i. in fact, i believe cad has changed return pumps at least twice since we got our tanks.

your problem could be a bad pump. if i were you, i'd just reach out to Eddie about that and see if he'll replace it since it's so new still.

+1 I think most of us swapped out the stock pumps (huge size and heat output) for smaller, more efficient pumps. I went with a Hyperflow 20HF as it provides 1290 GPH at 1' head and only uses 60 watts (I needed the extra flow to support a frag tank.)

steve, i like the new design! nice work.

Thanks Tim. Here is a recent picture...things have taken off! Almost ready for the CUC.

I ended up getting a Mag 7 and it is doing great. No change in the heat and it is very quiet. There must have been something wrong with the pump because it couldnt even push out enough flow to rotate the koralia rotating attachments. As soon as I hooked up the Mag they started spinning like champs. I am wondering now if I need to put a flow valve on it and turn it back a little.

I tried reaching out to Eddie about this issue and they finally responded to me yesterday...a day after I bought the new pump. Their response was that this is normal for a new pump to do this. I told them that it has finally just stopped working and I needed to get a replacement for it before my tank went south. Clay told me he will talk to Eddie about seeing what they can do for me but I am not holding my breath. I have been a little disappointed with CADLIGHTS and their after the sale customer service. They were extremely responsive to me before I made my purchase and now they are either very slow to respond to my inquiries or just dont ever respond.

Anyway, has anyone tried to swap out the fan on the MH fixture? Trying to see if I can find something a little quieter.

mag 7 is fine with no valve.

Eddies reply sounds funky to me. It is not normal for a pump to push less water when new. Is it a Sicce pump? Sicce's are really good performing pumps but they do have a bit of a hit or miss rep. Some loud, some quiet, some work, some dont.

I will pm Eddie and see if I can help.

Fan? I swaped out my stock fan for a stealth fan with vari-voltage transformer.

I'll have to find the link for you. The fan fits but it is a little work to get it in. Nothing major though.

There are many fans that will fit.

vantec fan link

It's kind of expensive because it comes with the grills and templates, but the vari volt transformer is great and this sucker is quiet.

Edit! I'll see what else I can find, but if you do get the vantec, "DO NOT" wire it to the existing fan wiring in the fixture or it will fry the fan motor.

The pump I got had no name on it. I googled the model number and really couldn't find anything on it. Clay said he would talk to Eddie but I never heard back. It's ok, I got the mag and it runs great!

Thanks for the link on the light fan.....I will take a look at it.

May stop by their Ontario, CA shop on monday to say hi. I'll mention the pump to Eddie. If the pumps bad, it's bad and should be replaced. At any rate you would still have a back up pump.

Tanks is looking good and that GHA will make a good meal for a CUC.

If I do swap out the fan, should I just use the power cord supplied and the plug into my apex? I can then program the outlet to turn on when the mh is on.

I'm also guessing that we have the same light fixture. I was going to take the light apart but didn't want to mess with it just yet.

Yes,

Use the supplied cord and transformer off the Apex.

I'm sure we have the same fixture but you may want to take a pic just in case.

The only thing tricky about the swap is that you may have to drill out the holes on the fan housing to accomodate the original screws. Mine were slightly larger than the holes in the vantec so I had to bore them out a bit.

Contact Eddie at Cadlights, he will replace your stock pump.

I'll PM you

Update for anyone thinking of using "sound proofing foam" inside the cabinet.

Still working flawlessly!!

Absolutely no moisture buildup whatsoever when using a sufficient ventilation fan.

I never had to remove any hoses or wiring to install it. Just scissors and a small tube of super glue-then presto! Half the sound in cabinet as before.

Just a note!

Happy Reefing!

been awhile - updates

been awhile - updates

Well it's been sometime since I've been able to post or had anything worth posting. It is time to change some bulbs so I figured new T5's and a new halide in a few months would cost me about $175 why not just go with LED for a few dollars more. So I just ordered the Ecoxotic 17.5" LED system for my tank and can't wait for it to show up.

I went back and forth between the Ecoxotic and AI system but finally decided that I liked the look of the Ecoxotic better. The sticking point was really just the controller for AI but my fish and corals have done well without the slow transition from morning to daylight to dusk or a moon cycle so they will likely continue to do well without out those things. I liked the idea of the Ecoxotic being able to fold up out of the way for working on the tank. So basically here it was ascetics that won out. I'll post pictures after I get the lights next week.

I also have an update to my skimmer "overflow tank" system. While this overflow has worked great allowing me to take a few weeks between skimmer draining it does have it's flaws. Firs, when my ATO malfunctioned and filled the sump to within inches of the top it caused the skimmer to pump water into my overflow container. When that fills up the water just spills out the inlet hole - not good for the floor. To fix that I added a drain hole a little below the inlet hole so the water drains back into the sump. I know this works because my ATO malfunctioned again and no spills, at least not from the skimmer. Now to replace my ATO and add a switch that will, hopefully, cut it off when the sump reaches a certain level.

I'll post pictures of my overflow tank update as well as the lights next week.

Then it is time for a low nutrient system to help fight the little bit of red slime that just wont go away.

Hello marinetankdiver!

Glad things are going good!

Looking forward to your update when you get the LEDs. Let us know.
As you may know, I run zeovit in my system and that eliminated my red slime issue after a couple of weeks. I'm wondering if you are going with the LN polymer in a reactor or you decided to go with zeo? Zeo is great but it is a dosing ritual that can become tiresome if you aren't into it. I have no problems with it but have found myself at times running out of the house late for work and turning around because I forgot my morning dosing regimen.

I have seen better coloration and much much less maintenance with the use of zeovit but still wonder about the polymer route. I may try that on my new system instead of the zeovit.

One thing that helped me with cyano was when I bought an eheim sludge extractor. That little sucker is awsome. Toss in some AA's and vacuum away. It pulls some nasty junk without worrying about siphoning or getting your hands wet. I rarely use it now because the zeo method keeps my sand bed clear, but man that little thing works good if you have a DSB with traditional fuge. Best cleaning tool in my arsenal-for sure!!!!

I'm currently waiting for a lumatek ballast for my stock cad fixture because my old ballast has been getting progressively worse over the last few months.
It's been running hotter and most likely adding to my increased electricity bill for a while now. I've changed bulbs in the last month and notice the intensity is much less than when the ballast was new. Hopefully the lumatek will perk things up a bit.

Still loving my cadlights 39!

Keep us posted & happy reefing!

Guys,

Im going to pick up my tank tomorrow at Cadlights! Eddie is working with me because I want to piece my tank together a little more than usual. I'm getting the Pro tank, sump, stand and BM skimmer. I plan to use a Mag 5 for my return to slow down the flow through the sump. I'm also going to go with a 4 lamp Aquaticlife T5 unit for my lighting. I won't be actually setting it up for a couple of weeks but I am getting pretty excited.

Welcome to the club!!! Good call on the mag 5. I put in a mag 7 and I think the flow is a little to strong and will probably put a ball valve on it.

Be sure to post a link to your build thread here so we can follow along with you!

Well I just got the tank home. Spent about an hour talking to Eddie and decided to go with the CAD return pump. It wasn't a big price difference so I figure I can replace it down the road if needed. I also got their T5 HO unit. Great deal when he included it in the pacakge. So Im all set. I'm going to put the stand together tonight and water test everything next weekend. My rock is curing so I have a couple of weeks to kill. Sweet tank though. They look even better in person.

Eddie is a cool guy. Very helpful.

Bubble-Magus NAC-3 up for grabs

Bubble-Magus NAC-3 up for grabs

I'm replacing my NAC-3 with a NAC-6 so if anyone needs a NAC-3 replacement let me know. I've had this NAC-3 running since I got my tank in January and it still works fine, I'm just re-configuring my sump and getting rid of the refugium portion, in exchange for an ULN system, so thought I'd go with a bigger skimmer while I was at it.

The replacement NAC-6 should be in my hands on 9/27/10 so this will be available to ship a few days after that.

For those with a CADlights tank all I'm asking for is the cost of shipping.

If nobody here needs it I'll throw it up for sale on the general board.

If you need any help with the LNS let me know.

On another note, I was looking at the new CAdlights site to see about some replacement moonlights and noticed they have an LED fixture on the site for $399 with a stated 250 watt HQI rated par. The fixture looks clean but I'm going to see about the spread soon. I will have to stop by the shop and ask Eddie to show me one powered up. Doesn't look like it uses crees but still seems nice.

If it looks good and PAR ratings check out, then $399 is a steal.
