Cadlights PLS-50 nano skimmer review

Yeah I got some crazy bubble coming out of the bottom of the body and there's also a very LOUD gurgling noise coming out of the skimmer's chamber. I already tried almost every possible tight and loose position on the pump lock and it's all the same. I'll try the teflon tape mod see if that makes a difference.

The first video is of the LOUD sound and the second is of the crazy bubbles.

LOL. if you really think this thing is loud you must be nuts.

OK do this:
1) Remove the cup
2) Remove the nut
3) Slide out the main body
4) If possible, take bracket out and check fitment of pump onto bracket...
5) Let body slide back into place and check its placement...
6) Put nut back in but not tight...
7) Replace cup
8) Make sure the drains are open and fire up, let it settle...
9) Tune slightly, little by little, waiting 5 minutes in between
10) Tighten nut until it holds the body of the skimmer in place, NOT LIKE YOU ARE TIGHTENING YOUR RIMS TO YOUR CAR!

Over tightening will offset the body to the bottom plate, hence releasing bubbles.

It can be a bit menacing the first time around, but since firing mine up the first go around, I have not had any of the above issues... Try my step by step, and it should give results...

Looks like mine, sounds pretty close, too. The bubbles subside, though never completely, after a couple weeks. The noise dies down a lot between the cup and top being on and the silencer on the airline. You may want to double check that the impeller on your pump is clear of any debris just in case.

It sounds like you are both judging the noise by keeping your head directly next to the skimmer.

You must not have had anything like a Tunze lol... it whistled and I was able to hear it from 20 feet away. From day one I couldnt even tell this thing was on.

You may want to check your airline for kinks. This really is a great skimmer and it has to be a fluke you are experiencing issues.

What is funny is that I have owned three 9002 tunze skimmers. I owned both the old and new pumps, too. The Tunze can be loud but the airline mod and a DIY silencer quieted the Tunze down to an inaudible level. From the factory the Tunze is a good bit louder than the CAD, though. The CAD is only loud up close. Once tucked away in the back of my Biocube I can hardly hear it. I get a pulsing sound that sounds like coffee brewing with the back opened, but I could probably silence that down further, too.

Sounds like you won the QC lottery. Want to trade? :D

If its that bad, you may want to ask for a new one. Myself, amongst about 7-10 others on Nano-Reef have no issues with the skimmer.

Sorry you are having a poor experience.

Moreso, as long as it is keeping our nitrates down, then its doing well? LOL...

This. Honestly, it isn't a terrible skimmer. My skimmer does work, albeit not as good as yours does. Overall, it just seems that my experience is vastly different than yours. It appears we have people on both sides of the coin, which means that either CAD is doing poor QC or that the skimmers may be more difficult to operate properly (I'm doubting this one). I asked CAD specific questions about the quality of the skimmer I received and they responded with a blanket "this is normal." They ignored my second email which requested direct answers to my individual questions.

I don't doubt people are having good results; and pictures do not lie. I just want to be sure that both sides of the story are told.

+1 completely agree with this.

The skimmer skims a little bit for now, I'll give it more time to break in, but there are some issues that maybe just a few of us are experiencing. Hopefully it's one of those things that go away though.

I'm going to give it a week or two before I comment on it again and see what results I get. This way I won't touch it as much and just let it do it's thing lol

Still can't believe the crap it is pulling out of my bio cube with only 3 fish.

Are you guys measuring 6" from the bottom of the pump's suction cups or the pump itself? in which the skimmer should be submerged?
