Or do you mean it's not legal for me to backfeed into my own breaker box through the dryer outlet to supply my house?
It's not legal to have it done period. One of those things that if your generator causes an electrical fire or something your insurance company won't pay out if their investigation finds out you did it. Also you could potentially be liable if anyone gets injured as a result again if anyone finds out. Ideally any line tech guys are trained to test the lines before working on them, but if you electrocute one the whole "well they should have checked" answer won't work

It's essentially the same with my solar power, the inverter is designed to be grid tied so it automatically shuts off if it detects the line side voltage drop to zero (i.e. I lose power) because it doesn't want to energize the lines and fry a worker.
