Calling out Pallobi!!!

Good sir, I can't seem to find your old SPS/Zoa thread with the tiles in the 80 gallon. Could you please share with me and everyone else your ability to keep both SPS and Zoas successfully as they are two totally different corals with what I thought was the exact opposite water quality.

I'm pretty much Zoa and SPS only right now and I want to achieve the same success.

Thanks,

Mike

Oh boy... I'm not really sure anything I've done could be called success... I had something really good going, and I crashed and burned harder than most (fortunately, I learned from my many, many countless mistakes)... I will find it for you now, or very soon anyhow, and post the link(s)...

Thanks man, I hate when good threads get buried.

I think you had great success with both, polyps maybe grew faster but still great stonies.

Here is my main thread, which I haven't given up on, I jus need to get back to corals and update it... It's my 75g display (which I gave away to a local reefer) followed by the deep blue 80g shallow similar to what mike now has, and a brief stint with an awesome, local made, 85g acrylic eurobraced cube (AWESOME tank, but acrylic isn't my thing)...

This thread cover from about April of 2011, Til the end of 2012...

Neal, I noticed that your 8bulb Tek light was really close to the display. I haven't gotten to when you had the 80 shallow, but how high did you have the light off the surface.

Mine is currently 12-15 inches off the rip of the aquarium not to mention 1-1.5 inches additional to the actual surface. This is why I'm asking for the par meter. I want to set my lights correctly.

I will say that I am getting decent growth on pretty much all the corals so far great color, well to the best of my knowledge anyway.

When I had the 75, I kept the light very close to the water surface... However the 80g, I kept the light about 10" off the surface, until I got a par meter and saw that the readings were less than what I personally wanted... I lowered the light for the duration of time I kept that tank... PAR levels have been shown, or at least from what I've observed on RC, to work pretty well at different levels for various sps and polyps... Don't get me wrong, I feel good PAR is very important, but stability and water chemistry/quality, are more important IMO... But of course, everything goes hand in hand I feel, and all aspects are very important for healthy corals... With that said, I know very little about keeping LPS...

Definitely check your PAR levels, but if all is well, you don't necessarily have to change or lower anything... If your happy with the results you've gotten, then you may wana jus leave things be in that regard...

Thanks for the Info neal, i was able to get through the 22 pages of your thread...my goodness what a ride that was. I really love the artisitic simplicity of the set up. It makes so much sense having no sand and all that flow. There is never a chance for unwanted nutrients to build up causing any issues.

Its just a shame that I like all that kinda stuff though, but like you said many times in your thread, whats pleasing to you may not be pleasing to others. Either way i've picked up alot of useful information from your build.

Hope to see some new words and photos from the 180!

Since Mike was interested, here is my 180g as of today... I'm at the point where I'm gonna start adding a few zoas and sps soon... I tried sand for a bit, but it jus traps too much garbage no matter what I do... I need a better light for the long haul, and I'd like to get a couple nice tunze streams at some point as well... At this time, I only have 5 fish (lost a powder blue I had for a couple months that slowly declined, and every few other fish due to my wrasse), I have a show size purple tang, a trio of yellow tangs, and a mystery wrasse that is the meanest little SoB I've come across... I also have 1 fire shrimp as I lost the second I had in a molting mishap... I have not used carbon in some time now, close to 6 weeks, but the carbon reactors are going back online tomorrow... My goal is to not add many sps at all, and give them plenty of space... I'd like to start adding some zoas as well... I recently got a nice frag of rasta zoas from an awesome local (bob) and I'm gonna see how they do, before I go nuts and get ahead of myself... I am also gonna rig up the second generic led fixture I have tomorrow right next to the one that is there now (no optics, Chinese made) tomorrow, to enhance PAR until I can afford a proper light... At this time, im only concentrating on the middle 2 feet/section of the tank... I'd still love to go metal halide, as alot of zoas and sps, jus don't look as well under LEDs... Save your pro led arguements for someone who cares, I jus don't like the look of them... I currently dose alk via dosing pump as the alk jus drops naturally on its own... I'm keeping my mag around 1500, and I test calcium on great occasion as without any corals, it's nothing to stress now, and keep that at about 420 to 430... My alk, I've always been comfy with it at about 8.5... So at this point, I'm gonna add a couple hardy sps and zoas, monitor, and see how they do... I plan on adding more fish, and inverts, as well...

Mike asked, so here is my system as it stands today... Like any other system, it's a constant work in progress... its 6 months old, and I'm proud I've been so patient with it, and I'm happy I've waited to add any corals...

Something else that is nice, is I can fit behind the display itself, so I can easily clean the back glass with the mag float you see on the back glass in the upper left, back glass corner...

So I've been re-reading this thread and a few others, and I wana say (whether these folks agree with anything I say or not) there are a few others that whoever reads this thread, should refer to far ahead of anything I have to say... Scott (swannyson), Chris (chris kid), and warren (pecan2phat), all know much more than myself... So before any lesser experienced folks read into anything I have to say, check with these cats first, cause I've got nothing on them, past or present... Well, obviously present, as I've got nothing to present, lol... Certainly not limited to jus these 3 folks, but I've followed them as I admire all 3 of their efforts and experience...

Another incredible person to google, is Nicks387 out of Taunton, MA... One of the best reefs in New England... Period... He is someone I've turned to personally in the past, and I admire his efforts greatly...
