Camara lens question??

Okay, I'm an old film SLR guy trying to get into digital.

The "normal" lens for a SLR film camera is a 50mm. The sensor for a Canon 30D magnifies 1.6 to one right? So a normal lens for a Canon 30D would be ~30mm?

The lens is still a 50mm lens. Everything about it's focus, DOF, etc is still a 50mm lens. Because the sensor is smaller the magnification of the image will appear to be the same as an 80mm lens on your 35mm.

50 x 1.6 = 80

Does that help?

Yes, if you want to see the same thing as a 50mm lens, then take a look at the 30mm instead.
