camera suggestion

I read thru the sticky posts, but now I would like to get some personal opinions. I currently have an old PowerShot, which I have had for years, but never use for anything other than taking a few pics of my reef every now and then. Just not the photo taking type.

So which camera would you recommend for me? Something fairly cheap, since I will only use for this, but still effective?

Fairly cheap to one person might not be fairly cheap to another.

I feel if you dont want to get into a DSLR setup, then the way to go is one of the G series cameras from Canon, like a G12 or get a used G11 or G10 for cheaper.

Shooting in RAW mode will make a big difference in how great your photographs look, and the G series can shoot in RAW so it's a huge point for it towards reef photography.

Recty's suggestion is excellent, both for the camera and the ability to shoot in raw. Some of the higher end powershots also shoot in raw, but the g12 is a better camera with a better lens.

Its funny to me that I will easily spend like 2 grand on some frags, or 500 on a dosing pump and containers to hold the solutions, but cringe at a $450 camera. However, I'm sure I will end up getting it. Thanks guys :p

Just the thought of this baby and Charlie Sheen having the good natured discussion above makes me grin.

Well I found out today that my brother, who lives with me, has a Canon PowerShot SX20IS. Would this camera do fine, or would you still recommend a new one? Sorry, I am an idiot when it comes to cameras :)

Yep, I knew it was too!!!!

It does, and I'm one of the folks who say the same thing. I was just giving Jesse some light-hearted ribbing.

Cheers

Listen to that^^^^^ In other words, work on your skills, you can't buy them.

What about a DSLR camera. Would I be better off getting a cheap end DSLR rather than a higher end point and shoot? If so, which DSLR would you recommend - preferably a bundle that comes with everything I need. Like I said, 99% of the use will be for my aquarium, and they definitely don't need to be top end pics.

I remember that I just graduated from college, so I can easily convince my dad to add this to the list of my grad present :). I'd say 5-800 dollars.

What about something similar to this?

and eventually invest in a new macro lens.

Take a look at the DSLR sticky at the top of this forum. There's nothing wrong with that camera, just keep in mind that to get the kind of aquarium photos that I think you want, you'll need to drop another ~$500-1000 on a macro lens.

Since you started off my asking for cheap, folks recommended P&S models.
