Can I buy a fuge light at HD or Lowes?

I've looked at a lot of bulbs and none of them are telling me how many K they are, I get Wats, Hours, PAR, but not the K value.... Do I need to look in the garden section or would these be with the rest of the bulbs in the light department? I don't want to order this online.

Thanks,

hold on one sec, let me go grab my photos for ya :D

I've used mainly the bulbs i get from home depot and lowes, but also found similar K rated bulbs at the dollar general. The K listing will be on the bulb itself if at all, not on the packaging. YOu have to look at the base of the bulb. Heres the one I'm using currenlty on my fuge.
Well, actually I have gone to the larger sized one, but same brand/make/ect.

Hope that helps

You can check Melevsreef.com. He found one that you don't have to have a reflector for... Its a flourescent floodlight, so it also is protected. :) I'm thinking about getting one of those next. I think he said he had better luck with the more common 5100k over 6500k with chaeto growth.

Yea I've seen Melevs site and that is where I got the idea that the K value would be on the packaging. But I guess only that manufacturer doe it that way.

I've read that 5100k will yeild better macro growth than 6700k. Only tried a 5000k-ish bulb once, but the wattage was too low, so I can't comment on that, but i hear it's good :D

If you want I can get you a 55k like i have and can give it to you tomorrow when you pick me up for macna

Some of them will say the k value, others won't. I just look for it on the packaging (obviously). :)

In the end, the bulbs are so darned cheap, it might be best to buy a few and try them all for a month each or something. If you decide you don't like one, just put it in a high-use fixture in your house and you'll save a hair on your electricity bill to boot.

It's always nice when reef keeping can "give back!"
