can i keep a dwarf in a 12 gallon

It really depends on the species, the size of the individual, your equpment, how well the tank is run in and your maintenance commitment. We keep many of our research animals in tanks smaller than 10 gal, but the aquaria have been running for years, we do frequent partial water changes, and we remove all uneaten food and remnants. Also, most of these small aquaria are set-up with canister filters that are larger than recommened - such as Fluval 204s. We have no problem with species such as Hapalochlaena lunulata, Octopus wolfi, O. bocki, O. mercatoris, and even slightly larger species such as A. aculeatus.
