Can I School Green Chromis Or Not?

I've read a lot of different threads, and it varies from:
1. I have 3,4,5,6,7,8 in my tank, and they're great
2. I buy them and they slowly kill each other off.

I have a 90 gallon, no fish currently.
(Re-doing my tank)

I was looking to get 3-5... But, if they're just going to pick each other off, I guess I won't.

Any suggestions? Do they kill each other the majority of the time, or rare?

Majority, in the first few months they might live together, but eventually you'll have 1 left. There are very few examples of long term groups, and many have tried, in bigger tanks.

I have kept, or tried, groups of green chromis a few times. I have always ended up with either one or two. Plus, they don't really school.

have had 5 in my tank together now for 4 yrs. Kinda shoal but not move as one ( school ) I had 9 to begin with and they decided 5 was a better number :) Added 4 more to make 9 again and back to 5 in 2 months

So what's another good schooling type?
I kind of wanted to center my remodeled tank around the Green Chromis school...

You have your 5 in a 210G, Nikon?

yep...schooling is a defensive behaviour that doesnt really happen in our aquariums due to no predators in the tank to keep them schooled

edit: anthias, chromis and zebra bar gobies are going to be your best bet

imo the best school fish is Blue Streak Cardinal (Zoramia leptacantha). You can get 10+ and they're always together. Plus if they are fully acclimated to your tank they will get really awesome colours. It looks cool :)

For Example:

yes i forgot cardinals ( longspines above would be a food choice ) my clown tang kinda keeps mine schooled lol. but they still do their own thing

I asked the guys at my LFS today, and they basically said "Hit or miss"
That they've seen 4-5 in a tank stay that way, and they've seen them dwindle down.

I'm not a huge fan of the Cardinals.
I've had the Bangaii and a Red-Flame Cardinal currently in a 40 gallon. The Bangaii never really did much, and the Red-Flame is a huge *** :)

I've had 5 in a tank for over a year now with no problems but to stay they school or shoal would definitely be an exaggeration. They are always out in the open in the top third and encourage other fish out so they are doing what they're supposed to be doing in my mind.

I guess I maybe shouldn't have put "School". I just wanted multiple Chromis in the tank, without them playing Gladiator.

If they're not together all the time, that's fine, I just love the colors and the fish. All the LFS have 5-7 in their big displays and it always catches my eye.

4-5 would be fine, but, if it's a 90% chance that within 3 months they'll be down to 1, I wouldn't buy them.
Seems mean if you know it'll end that way. If it's 50/50... Maybe I'd try.

Seems like it does work with some people. Like everything in the fish businesss

Well, usually it takes longer than 3 months, but the majority of folks that try it have attrition.
