reefsahoy= Why did you go from T5 to MH-T5 was it the shimmer that you missed? Have you noticed a difference in coral color and growth?

it was a very hard decision first of all. i wanted shimmer but didn't want heat. i got a open top rimless tank and the water stays at 78 degrees without chillers. my tank get a very slight breeze from the ac vent whenever it turns on and that's enough to keep it cool.
i've also gotten alot better at keeping reefs after i changed to MH so it's hard to say if it's just MH vs T5, however i think the colors are actually better with T5's. As far as growth it's hard to say. I had good growth with T5's as well as MH. The big draw back with MH is power consumption, and hot spots/shade spots where you have to place corals in specific areas depending on rock work and MH placement.. I could go with T5's only and burn 350 Watts or with MH 700 watts. Thats almost half power consumed, less heat into the house so the ac works less which in turn saves significant $ overall.

that's a really nice tank! love the rock aquascaping. whats the dimentions of your tank? how did you prop up the rocks so it doesn't topple over? I really like the smaller island!

Thanks reefsahoy!!!! the rock work is being held together with acrylic rod only, and no the rock work does not topple over. the tank dimention is 60" W X 18" D X 24" H.

I used 1/2" rod on the bigger pieces of LR and 1/4" on the smaller ones. If you are using sizable pieces I would go 3/4" + as mine were a little wobbly once placed in the tank, but don't move at all in it. I also didn't want to use putty which is why it was kinda wobbly (nothing bad though).

it was a combination of live rocks and dried-out live rocks not man made rocks.
I only used 1/4" acrylic rods. I did plan to glue the rocks to secure them but after using the acrylic rods I found the structure stable enough so I did not use any other glue or epoxy.
when your building your structure build it outside your tank and play around with the rocks when you find them most secure then it's time to drill the rock work and install the acrylic rods. don't be afraid to chip-off bits and pieces of your rocks.
