thank you brother. I would have to concur- Scopas/rostratum. Tight fish, Mark. (jealous).

Thanks. I am pretty happy. It is still in a breeder container and has begun to eat all ready. :) I think it is almost time to release him, but I am worried how my achilles will treat him.

He's free in the reef :D

Here is picture of him under flash only

If the achilles roughs him up, spear and eat the achilles. Thats like going out viking style for an achillies!

John- here is a really bad picture of him today. He is much more comfotable hiding in the acros and smaller caves. I will have to work on getting better shots of small, fast moving fish.

I think I like this one better than the 100% blacks! I love the silver squiggles.

I think it might be because of its smaller size?

I agree.

As said before small black tangs, Z. Rostratum are hard to come by. I know of three small ones, 3" for sale from a very reliable source if anyone is interested PM me. Regards, Tim

So, does anyone have pictures of their small black tangs around 2" to compare my fish to?

I can not say that it is a hybrid or that it is just a juvi black. I have had people argue both ways. :)

Either way, I am very happy with my fish.

I don't want to bust your bubble if he's yours, but I don't think that is a black. Black tangs do not have a "pattern" on their skin. They are completely black. Looking real close at the picture you can see the dots/lines in the body that almost make it look like a scopas variation/hybrid. I would definately say it's a scopas but the lines as opposed to dots are throwing me off. I'll see if I can find some pics to help.

Did you ever find the pictures you were talking about?

I posted the link directly under that paragraph. One of them was myrest2's and another was gasman's and they both already posted pics in this thread. Check out nava's in the link though very nice deep black hybrid. No black tangs I have ever seen, large or small have a pattern in them. Either way, like I said before, it is a gorgeous fish. I personally would take a hybrid over a black.

I am still looking for pictures of a 2" version. The only other 2" juvinile I saw looks exactly like mine. Now that it is 5.5", it has the silver streak. Just trying to make heads and tails of this. Thats all. Like I said, I am very happy with my fish.

its definitely a black tang. Hybrid - not so sure. its to small to tell. I receive scopas in the 1-2" range and they look nothing like black tangs. I have had a couple 1-3" blacks and they look like yours. some come in jet black and some are a little faded, mainly due to stress. When faded you can see the squiggles clearer. nice find! hopefully i get some this week, but as john mentioned, only dinner plate sizes have been coming in lately. :(
