Can I see your black tangs

Copps ... does Jack give meristic data such as dorsal fin ray counts for Z. scopas and Z. rostratum? I have just moved to SF and don't have any of my reference books. If he does and they are different, than a hybrid should have an intermediate number of dorsal spine rays. That should settle the debate as to what this fish is.

Cheers!
Charles

Hello Mark,

This is the person who sold you the fish. I didn't even know you were unhappy and have doubt about my product. I couldn't find your number at the store and couldn't get a hold with sean..but I found you here by a third party telling me this online web page.

As you know, I stand behind all my products 100%. Just like the UV ozone you bought, I am willing to rip parts out of the new box to make you a happy man.

Like what I said, if you are not happy or don't think it's the right item, just bring it back anytime. Don't worry about old cranky Nelson. I will give you extra 10% on the refund for your trouble.
All other black tangs were sold, this is the only option that I can offer.

I checked the invoice and called the supplier to verified the items.
They are what they are and you even knew how much we paid for them.
You know I don't do fish and coral orders...heh.
Not to offend anyone but seems like only non-pro opinions are provided here.

Please call me anytime and bring it to my attention ASAP next time if you have any quesions/problems..etc.
Every customer is a happy camper that walk out of our door. Thats my personal goal.

Regards,
Tim@LFS
There's always going to be many opinions regarding reefkeeping and fish, as far as corals there could be 4 dif names and so forth.
IME fish are fish-and named accordingly.

Being involved in the biss side of this hobby certainly does not make anybody a "pro".

IME blacks come more often than not as hybrids unless they are shipped as dinner plate size.

I've been on both sides of the hobby out of the investment biss side for 15 years, seems like there's only one person responsible ( the buyer, As far as the LFS 4 sure the fish was a Black at least in their budget and mindset.

Beautiful fish!

Thanks Tim for your input here. I do not believe that you guys would purposely sell 3 hybrids as black tangs unless you guys bought them as black tangs yourself.

Instead of putting all the details here on RC, I will just talk to you in person. I have no hard feelings and I like the fish. Its in here

And everytime I put a net or hand in the tank, something breaks.

Like I said, I am not upset with the fish. Its cool little guy, but its not worth breaking up my tank trying to get him out. He is doing well and he is now part of my reef. :D

I use a Nikon D40x and the 105mm lens. I would like to upgrade my body, but there are still a couple fish I am looking for :D

John-

Can you link me the description of these. I would like to read further to see what variant I may have. Thanks

First, the scopas/rostratum hybrid...

And second, the full Zebrasoma scopas... black variety...

And here's another one from my collection... check out this "black tang"... :)

First off, that last fish is actually a color variant of a purple tang I have... in regards to linking to more information on the other two fish, this is the Bishop Museum page , but not much info is given other than collection site and size... Jack mentions them in a few of his books, but does not go into depth on them... the only thing that goes into depth on them was a scientific paper published in 2001 by Jack Randall along with Rich Pyle and Rob Myers in the journal Aqua. I am a new subscriber to this after hearing Jack rave about it, and you could buy back issues, but they are expensive. The article described three surgeon hybrids and was number 3 in 2001...

Hey Charles! Welcome to the mainland! Unfortunately there are no meristic differences between rostratum and scopas... Jack says they just go by snout length and color. Snout length obviously is much more evident in larger individuals, so that leaves us with color it seems... We cannot know for sure, but I think we could all agree he has some rostratum in him at the least...

By the way, here's another shot of small hybrid sold a while back... I tend to hoard these images! Also keep in mind that there is variation in all hybrids, and I'd bet the hybrids are breeding back into the population as has been seen with others, making not all 50/50 hybrids...

Thanks John. The next time I get the camera out and capture my fish, I will make sure to get you over a full sized picture.

Yes that is a baby black tang recently caught. Unfortunately it is not mine but was just sold today. Should be seeing it soon on these forums I hope. That black tang is about an 1" to maybe an inch and half at the most. Regards, Tim
