I got some chewable interceptor, is this ok? Cant seem to find a definitive answer on this. Has anyone used it? I have read this is all thats available now so Im sure others must have tried it. Please chime in if you have used these chewies or if you know someone who has. Thanks so much!

I do. I use the beef flavored ones. The coral polyps come out and seem enjoy the beefy-ness. Red bugs don't have as much of a good time tho.

I am about to dose the tasty chews, 23 mg MO, 228 praziquantel. Apparently the praziquantel is the same med that is found in prazi pro to treat flukes in fish - bonus! Let me know how it goes and I'll do the same, be interesting to compare notes.

No, I don't have any acro crabs unfortunately. I like those little guys. My cleaner shrimp was surprisingly still kicking after the treatment though. I don't know if he'll last long term though.

Can you over dose with the chewable interceptors from it having the praziquantel in it or is it unlikly?

I think you should be fine, but maybe check prazi-pro dosing instructions. Mine tolerated the MO dose recommended based on one large tablet per 380 gallons or whatever with the corresponding Prazi amount just fine.

Jordan, best of luck to you!

Thanks Bernie, without you, I wouldn't be able to fight this battle against the bugs! :uzi: I owe u bigtime, your a life saver!

If you dose isn't too big, your cleaner shrimp should survive. might feel like they went 12 rounds in a cage match, but should survive.
too big a dose, and while it shouldn't harm the tank, will kill the shrimp.

I used a 1/3 of a tablet first time around. Yesterday I used the rest 2/3's of the tablet, and this time my cleaner shrimp didn't make it, but I didn't want to take any chances that any red bugs were going to make it through. I ground up the tablet and then poured it into some boiled RO/DI, it seemed to dissolve a bit better than in straight tank water.

I think that amount of praziquantel is about 60 xs the recommended dose in prazi pro. You can check the math. Here is a post of mine from a recent thread on Interceptor Spectrum:

I've dosed Interceptor( not th spectrum) a couple ofmonths ago for the first time with good effect on red bugsand no harm. Pods recovered qucikly.

I've dosed pazi pro for flukes but not to a reef tank. it works well for for flukes but not internal nematodes , ime. Treated a radiant wrass in quarantine with heavy doses and the worms didn't quit till it died over the course of 4 days. The manufacturer,Hikari, says it's safe for reefs except for worms that might be kept.

I have never tried the
Interceptor Spectrum. I've read a bit on paziqauntel and prazi pro in an attempt to determine how much praziqauntel is in prazi pro so as to compare the usual dose with what would come in with (228 mg) with a large dog Intercetor Spectrum tablet.containing 23 mg of milbemycin.

The information on prazi pro contents is hard to find. I found one reference that lists the ingredients as: oxibisproparanol( as an inert solubilizing agent) and < % 5 praziquantel. The recommended dose per HIkari ,the manufacturer, is .25ml per gallon ,so if we assume,%5 is %4, that would be: .04x.25 =.01 mg per gallon as a "safe" dose.

The usual
interceptor milibemycin oxime dose is 23 mg for up to 380 gallons or .06mg per gallon.

A 380 gallon tank would get 228mg of praziquantel with a large dog Spectrum tablet. The "safe" dose or prazi pro , the Hikari product, would be only .01 x380 or 3.8mg,60 times less. I don't know if the higher concentration of praziquantel would be harmful at the higher concentration or not but 60x the usual dose is a lot to worry about.

I'll be reading accounts by users closely before I think about using it even for dips.
